I agree about the padding of the bill, especially when it's an older dog. I'd also get familiar with how to express those glands for future episodes and just keep them expressed on a regular basis.

I had an old dog that became impacted from trying to eat bones with worn down teeth...after a vet visit where they merely did an X-ray, dis-impacted her rectum and gave her an enema~$400. The next time that happened I did all that myself~minus the x-ray~and it didn't cost a dime.

Maybe it's due to indoors living? I've never heard of a dog that lives outside all the time having impacted anal glands...could be due to them getting to express them any time they want? They tend to mark territory a lot, so maybe those anal glands are still being used for their intended purpose with dogs that live outdoors all the time.

I have heard of some breeds being more prone to that...seems like I heard about Pomeranian dogs needing that quite a bit. My aunt's Poms used to scootch across the carpet on their butts all the time to get relief from the itching of the problem.

A vet once told a client it is more common in small dogs. Its because when dog size was shrunk down the anal gland stayed the same size.Have no idea if this is true.

Vets are all different. Switched when took dog in for shots (normal spread), $120 later, I left never to red turn. Charged for exam, physical, and a bunch of unnecessary things plus shots. At the time, $35 was normal charge for rabies, distemper package.

The vet office called a few minutes ago. She "came through" ok and is awake. They want to keep her overnight to see if she can poop ok without causing excess bleeding. She has a drain in, had antibiotic and painkiller shots.
The day care she goes to one day a week has a groomer on hand. I think I will just arrange to have her groomed there, and they can do the anal glands and her nails too. Maybe once every couple/three months?

I would like to say something about vaccines. The only one you have to give by law is Rabies.all other vaccines are your choice. 20 years ago it was recamended booster vaccines be given every year. There is now a big movement we are over vaccinating our pets. People are stopping giving yearly boosters. Vets needing to make up money lost on not vaccinating, are telling clients, then you need to run blood titer to make sure pet is protected. I have seen thousands of titers run over the years. Never once has a titer come back unprotected !!!!! I am almost 100% sure puppy vaccine protect for LIFE of pet.

In a long, long time ago, distemper shot was 2X in life of dog. Now every year. I use the 3 year rabies shot. Trouble is the vet forgets.

He is so cheap, hard to complain. He pulls blood to check for heart worm eggs before selling heart worm Meds. He is as cheap as Internet and I'm not going to sell him out for a few bucks even if he was a little higher.

The vet FORGETS.?? That seems really bizarre, do they not keep any type of records?? Of all the things you don't want forgotten, its that the vet gave you dog its rabies shots on schedule. If there is ever an incident of dog biting person, its a huge issue and usually results in euthanasia of your dog if its not up to date on Rabies vaccine (or you can't prove its up to date). Not worth the risk, sometimes paying more is worth it.

AMEN. I've never given my dogs more than one rabies vaccine. Since we don't live near people and my dogs don't travel much, if at all, then they only need the vaccine to protect them from rabies, not a yearly proof of having the vaccine every year.

I also don't do heartworm crap for the dogs. They live as long as they are supposed to live, just like we do. The medicine is so harsh it's worse than the parasite. My dogs enjoy amazing good health until it's their time to go.
