Itchy Butt (Dog)

He errored on side of caution. Dog already had 3 year shot. His assistants had already pulled the booster. No big deal. It's up to me to keep my dog up on his shots. Vets (& their assistants) are human and will make mistakes. Over-all he runs a good practice. I worked 2 years at the top small animal hospital in Illinois so I feel fairly confident in my opinion.

@Beekissed You Are welcome to your opinion. I've seen dogs dying of heart worms, it is a horrible (& easily prevented) problem. The cure is tough as you use a poison and can kill the dog by the dead heart worms clogging the heart. That is why I will always use a preventative. To each their own.

Why, thank you for letting me have my opinion! :) The medicine isn't the only preventative to heart worms. ;) There are many natural things a person can do to keep their animals healthy that don't involve plugging them full of medicines.

I think labeling the medicine as a preventative is a misnomer, as it is a parasiticide and does not prevent infection, but merely helps keep the number of parasites from becoming an over infestation.

I don't have my dogs on heartworm preventive for 2 reasons. It is very, very rare in NY, my dogs are house dogs. They go outside do their business then demand to be let back in. If I lived in the south, I would most likely have them on it.

The town here where most of the strays are picked up is a river town. Lots of mosquito-breeding backwater and sloughs in the summer. Heartworms are a major problem here. An unprotected dog wouldn't have a chance.

My poor baby is home from the vet, with a "cone of shame" and two drainage tubes sticking out of her butt. She is not a happy camper! Have to leave the cone on for a week. That's going to be difficult for all of us. I am sitting here wondering if we could cut a few holes in the walls of the cone, so she could see better.
