I understand that Ava and Jack are growing Sweet n Early Cantaloupes, that this year is a trial run, next year they'll do 40 acres, year after that it'll be 360 acres, and after that every square foot of their county will be covered in melons, so I'm making here a progress report topic for their Cantaloupes.

:weee

me likum cantaloupes!

hopefully we'll get a daily report!!!

I don't know about a daily report, as it would most likely put you to sleep. We have planted six seeds, and as we have NEVER tried these before we can not guarantee anything. That said, Ava is looking forward to the challenge. Recently at dinner my wife wanted to discuss something and did not want Ava to know what was being said so she spelled the word, and Ava said: what about, and said the word Theresa had just spelled. Five years old mind you!! Oh they mature so quickly today with computers and all..

Here is our selection. I bought the seeds from someone on eBay and I hope they are what they are supposed to be as these are a hybrid.

Cantaloupe, Sweet 'N Early Hybrid
Ideal for short-season areas.

Customer Favorite!
This Burpee bred melon is ideal for areas with short growing seasons, and it's our best early cantaloupe, bearing longer than any other melon in our trials. It has firm, bright salmon flesh that is sweet and juicy; the fruits are round to oval, 4" by 5", slightly ribbed with corky netting and a small seed cavity. The vigorous, productive plants bear 6-8 melons each and resist powdery mildew.

Fruit Weight: 6 pounds

Days to Maturity: 75 days

Sun: Full Sun

Height: 15-18 inches

Sowing Method: Direct Sow/Indoor Sow

Spread: 3-6 feet

Days to pick the first ripe fruit from the time the plant is transplanted in the garden.

Oh, I hope they grow for her! I would hate for that sweet little gal to be disappointed. In my experience, it all depends on the weather... I had more melons than I could eat last year (both muskmelon and watermelon). Of course, they loved the heat and they didn't mind the drought, as long as I watered. Here's hoping for a long, hot summer!

Ill NOT plant melons this year then since every year I do we get a cool blah summer. If I don't plant them we'll get a good hot summer. Last year would have been a great summer, but did I have them? Nope. Got a bazillion cukes though.

Good luck Jack

Thank you Jared, since you are practically insuring the rest of us a long hot summer, maybe I'll try Blacktail Mountain again. :)

6 plants is all? Jack, surely Ava wants 6,000 plants! :D

I bet at 5 she'll know where to plant them. All around town!

You know how awesome it is you're doing the gardening thing with her at that age? In 80 years she'll be telling her great grandkids some of her earliest memories were gardening with you.

Are you growing them hydroponically and keeping them inside?
No, we put in a raised bed for Ava at the end of last summer. She planted green beans and was so proud of them. When I asked what she was going to plant next season she did not hesitate a moment before she said cantaloupe! She has asked several times during the winter if it was time to start the seeds yet.

Her first harvest.
