Are you growing them hydroponically and keeping them inside?
No, we put in a raised bed for Ava at the end of last summer. She planted green beans and was so proud of them. When I asked what she was going to plant next season she did not hesitate a moment before she said cantaloupe! She has asked several times during the winter if it was time to start the seeds yet.

Her first harvest.

Success with Cantaloupes is a test for even experienced gardeners, especially north of zone 7, and the farther north the ever more so. That's for experienced gardeners.

Now doing a successful Cantaloupe crop at 5!

Is Ava prepared to be famous? I mean, rockstar famous! I don't think even the Gettles of Baker Creek's little child has done such a thing.

I think Ava will do it! Might should have a wordpress blog or something for this!

It is still at least four weeks before we can consider planting the melons outdoors, so today, while Miss Ava was in Florida enjoying the sun and fun at Disney World, I transplanted the melons into 4" pots. It is beginning to seem like I am the assistant and she is the boss, not the other way around. The melons are in the back of the tray and the plants in front are Telegraph and Little Leaf cucumbers.

We grew those type last year and got 5 count them 5 melons off of 2 plants,. Funny thing was , that all were on 1 plant none on the other but it had a lot of blooms! I think the bean harvest pic is a contender for POW, she looks so proud.

PS thank you Jared for the weather update, think ill start a couple things we never have enough summer for!!

Well, I thought a progress report would be appropriate; so here it is. We were off to a slow start, but the plants are beginning to perk up with all the rain, heat and humidity. We are seven inches above normal in terms of rainfall. :(
The plants are starting to climb the trellis, and while I was peeking under the leaves this morning I found a female flower with a tiny melon forming. It has been so humid I am concerned about powdery mildew, and I will begin spraying to prevent it this evening. So far, so good.

Those are looking great!

Notice how they start growing fast when it gets hot?

Melons are like boatbabes. They like it hot and sunny, lol
