Poor Ava can no longer get to her garden tool shed, seen in the background. Melons melons everywhere and more than a month to go. I am sure glad we only planted a few plants, because we would have to move out of the house if we had a dozen. Not having grown them before I am amazed at how hard and heavy the little buggers are. Tomorrow I am going to cut up a few old t-shirts to make slings to support the melons on the trellis. My wife is not really keen on that idea, however we are the only ones who have to look at them. ;)

You could put the melons in bras hanging by wires. Your wife might know what size bra to use for the melons if you described to her how big the melons will get.

Nylons would also work, but she is fresh out of them, so I'll go with the t-shirts. Marshall, you never told me this would be a difficult project.

Didn't I mention that Cantaloupes are a true test of a gardener's skill?

*oops*

I noticed a small nasty brown spot on the bottom of one Ava's melons, so I decided to be safe rather than sorry and placed a small plastic pot beneath each melon to raise them from the soil. Also, I decided to use plastic trellis netting with small openings to support the melons on the the trellis. I will do that as soon as I find it, as I put it somewhere so that I would always know where it was, but I forgot where I put it.

That Ava's quite the farmer! She got an excellent foreman working for her too!

I mentioned the netting to my wife at dinner and she said: "Let me think, it is in a grey plastic Wal-Mart bag on a shelf in the tool shed." Then, she said: "You don't expect me and Ava to eat ALL of those melons do you?" I replied: "You know dear this was not our idea, there is a guy who lives in the woods and drinks beer and plays cards with Bigfoot, it was all his idea."

Lol, I'm not the beer drinker. That honor goes to Mrs. Bigfoot, and I haven't seen her since she got upset after losing a long game of hearts.
