Seems to be a lot of generalizations going on...
we have members here that live in the city, or at least not out in the boonies, and I don't pick up any sour grapes or attitudes of superiority or contempt from them...:hu
Thank you Thistle, well said. It makes me sad that my TEG friends lump us all together.

People like to live, where people like to live.

Yogi Berra: Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded.

Heavy overcast here ... after an eternity of darkness! I wish I could fly straight up in the air - like a lark! Singing!

"Get me outta here!!"

I'm not saying no one should live in the city. Nyboy appreciates all the venues and activities going on and i think that's just great...for him, Mary, and the many others. Me? I get the creepy crawlies in crowds and need starry skies in order to get to sleep. I'm sure it is as much a nurture thing, that is what a person grows up with and is used to. Visiting the city is fine for me if I have a good reason, but reasons are few and far between.

That's because they have "country" in their heart. :love I lived in town for 30 years. It was a great little town to raise kids and a nice place to live. I wanted to live out of town, but did what was needed to raise my family. Now it is my turn. :clap

My White Plains next door neighbor brought her dog in for grooming today. She commented that I was up very late last night, must have been watching a good movie. Privacy is one thing you do give up living close to other people.

You don't have privacy our in the sticks either, it's called "being a good neighbor". A good neighbor texts to ask if that was you shooting just now and you text back to say yes, was scaring off coyotes (it was dark). A good neighbor comes over when he hears machinery to see if he can help. A good neighbor comes over when you're gone to poke around to see if anybody that doesn't belong has been there. A good neighbor keeps a close eye on your place. A good neighbor calls 12:30 at night to tell you that coyotes were at your fence so you can go out and check your livestock. A good neighbor is nosey-in a good way. And being a good neighbor, you respond in kind.

who needs privacy? :gig

Good nosy neighbors are great and can save you money and many headaches. I love those kinds of nosy neighbors...usually they are of the older generation, when folks still remember what good neighbors were supposed to be like.

Then there are the bad nosy neighbors, who are nosy just to be nosy or make your life miserable....like seeing you have company during hunting season, so they run their four wheeler back and forth on the property line and make all the noise they can to ruin the hunt. Found out four bucks were killed on the first day of bow season on your land last year so the tree stand gets mysterious bullet holes during hunting season(we don't gun hunt here). When you discover all their game cams are pointing in the direction of your property.... That list can go on and on and on, as hunting tends to turn men crazy and make them act like complete and total nuts.

Or they comment on the things you are doing at your house, asking pointed questions, making more pointed comments that all suggest that you are crazy to be doing what you are doing(gardening differently than others, free ranging chickens, having hair sheep instead of the more popular woolly breeds, having a camp fire in the yard on weekends, reading books on the front porch~yes, in some rural areas, that is just the most odd behavior, painting and sprucing up a rental house, butchering livestock, etc.)...and then they tell everyone in the county a blow by blow account of what those "crazy" outsiders are doing now. :D Life is slow out in the sticks, so folks tend to make their own entertainment...usually that's being nosy about their neighbors.

Across the street from country house is a old lady who is the joke of the street. From 1st light she watches everything that goes on. If something doesn't meet with her approval, she will put a unsigned note in your mailbox. I was warned about the home guard 1st day . Over the years she has disapproved of many things I do. When I get a note ( about 3x a year) I have to feel sorry for her. Because everyone on the street has gotten notes from her I don't get ofended by them.

I've noticed that there seems to be different neighborhoods within neighborhoods.

It's important for us to "get along" with our next door neighbors. We are likely to try harder with those relationships. Down the road, we don't need to try so hard. Right across the street may be a visibility problem but, down the road, we can keep our eyes averted or stare or whatever we like!

This sort of thing make for "groups" of people, behaving in somewhat the same manner.

This sort of thing seems to hold true until you get to the local "manor." My next door neighbor at the place where I once gardened was originally the home of the local "land baron." It was owned by a retired military guy, his wife and their 3 grown children, all at home. He managed a local store as a second career while his wife must have been in charge of "upkeep." I talked with her now and then when she was out in the yard.

It was a two story house with a full basement. She described that basement as big enuf to drive a truck into. I think that the cavernous aspect of it kind of frightened her! The 5 person family must have rattled around in the house; I'd guess that it must have had about twice as many bedrooms as people. Fortunately, there wasn't a lot of land that went with it. She sure seemed to have her hands full.

It's for sale now. I was never inside and didn't bother to tell her that my uncle, a real estate agent, had been. He described it to me years before as nearly derelict. That was obviously no longer true with this family and their work ethic. The "bones" of that home were strong but even to me, driving by in those long ago years, it was obvious that the manor house was a shell of what it once was. My uncle blamed the land baron's elderly daughter, her drinking and her German shepherds.
