IF it has a decent amount of wood shavings in it, the bacteria breaking down the fiber will tie up nitrogen. I doubt whether it is composted enough since it takes years to break wood up. JMHO.

IF I had a clay based garden with lot of grasses, I would make most of you crazy.

First, let them start to green up, kill with round-up.

Second, till in manure/straw/shavings WITH some urea. Let sit till planting, use some 19-19-19 cover garden, till. Let sit for week, plant.....

IF pH was 6 or below, spread some lime with 19-19-19.

IF sand, use roundup to kill grasses (I didn't, Stll fighting grasses-tired of it). Apply lime IF needed to correct pH.

Use some 19-19-19 over top, till in. Use the straw/shavings mix to mulch the garden. Horse manure (especially if over a year old) will not burn anything. Guessing 10% (or less) of actual manure in mix.

Largest problem (outside of ants) in sand is the July/August heat will burn roots-thus the mulch.

Yes, not using hot manure, making sure it's good and composted. I asked the neighbor, he has lots of animals and I might get it delivered and somewhat spread, wish me luck:)
