I've really gone and done it now. It has been so much work with all these unexpected meat birds that I had to cancel my order of egg layers coming in April. So while I was sulking around saddened by the fact that there wouldn't be any cute peeps around this year....I went ahead and made a different order for the end of May! This on includes the following-

2 Dark Brahma chicks
2 Salmon Faverolle chicks
2 Black Star chicks
2 Golden Laced Wyandotte chicks

and....

2 Cayuga ducklings
2 Gold Star ducklings
:weee

I need things to keep me busy in the next few months. Josh is working out of town now and won't be back steady until June. So I have lined up all kinds of fun projects for me to do until he gets back :D

That should keep you occupied HPQ!

The feed stores will be having Chick Days starting in April. I'm really tempted, especially because one of the breeds is a light Brahma. ( How does that compare with Dark Brahma I wonder?)

But brooding them in the house is rather unpleasant, so I'll probably just watch for somebody to sell pullets in a breed I want.

I quarantine mine for at least a month before they go in with my other hens. I bought some grown pullets on craigslist and made sure I asked lots of questions before I even went to their farm. Were they vaccinated? Where did they come from? How old are they? Have you had chickens here before? Has there ever been an outbreak of any disease here before? What other animals do they have contact with? Are they free ranged or penned? What kind of feed are they eating at the moment and what is the protein percent? When I went to pick up the birds, I wore different shoes and clothes than what I wear at home because you can pick up diseases that way. I made sure to disinfect the bottoms of those shoes and wash those clothes in hot water as well. It may seem like a lot but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
