Lost my beautiful old horse

My beautiful Rascal passed on January 13, 2023. He was about 30 years old and I have had him since 2009. I have had a horse or 2 for at least 40 years. So weird to not have a horse to run out twice a day and feed. I lived for the weather report in planning his daily care. Such a sweet child loving horse he was. I have not been able to ride him in a few years, but hearing him call to me every time he saw me has been a joy. We were pals. Here he is as a young horse flying through his field. My favorite picture of him.

How very sad to hear of your horse's passing. I love your photo of Rascal in the field with all four hooves in the air; it is easy to see why this is your favourite shot. What a beautiful image to remember him by.

Be careful ... if your pastures are empty too long... you might find yourself eventually filling them with a lovely backyard dairy cow

Funny that you should say that. For the last few years I have been telling my husband I needed another horse to keep Rascal company and one that I can ride .He just kept saying not to get another horse. I am strong and healthy but I am at an age that could change. AS soon as my boy was gone he started talking about another one. My daughter and husband built a house way back behind our horse field. They have 3 1/2 year old twins. She never expressed an interest in getting a horse, but did say he kept the coyotes away. If I had back up help for the future I would consider one. But we also have been talking about a beef cow. My Son in laws Dad is a beef farmer in the south, so I think he would love to give it a try. For now I plan to go to a stable and ride one of their old plugs.

I am so sorry for your loss.
It never gets easier, but, you didn't have to feed a horse whose teeth would wear down to nothing.
I'll bet a nickle you end up with another this year.
I read a recent blog where some woman went to South Dakota and went on a rental trail ride and brought home the gelding she was riding.
Same thing could happen to you.
My sweet mare will be 25yo this year.
