Nor do I.

IF anyone can't bear to put the dog down, keep it away from others.

I'm cruel, I'd give the dog option of changing or dying. I have no problem with corporal punishment. It has changed dogs (& kids) behavior.

This dog should be destroyed. Your son needs to file charges, this will happen again. He could very well save the life of the next victim by making sure this dog doesn't live, to do this again.

I am so sorry this happened to Ava. She is not only special to you, but to everyone here on TEG. Big hugs for Ava.

no dog should be destroyed unless it can not be properly socialized , most of the time the owners are at fault for not doing their part. not saying my girls are perfect. but when we have friends over they are either crated or put on a lease till we trust them ,if there's going to be small children they get put in their create.

Jack sorry about Ava, it happens a lot, which I can not understand. A person might chose to keep a dog that bites, why would they have it around company blows my mind!! Lock the dog away, I once told a client who wanted to keep a fear biter rule of house, when doorbell rings dog in crate before anwering door. The dog a akita mix mauled the cleaning lady so bad she spent a week in hospital. she is sueing owner of dog for outrages amount. Their homeowners insurance is not covering because dog had history of biting. I would have owner cover any medical bills your granddaughter might have,

My son John is an easy going guy, but he had to leave the house while his wife got Ava ready to be taken to On Call. He said he never in his life thought he would get angry enough to kill someone, but he did that night. As for me, a dog would get one strike and then it would be curtains. His wife, however, is all about forgiving. The aunt was crying saying how sorry she was, so his wife feels bad for them. For John's part, Ava will NEVER be allowed in their house again, dog or no dog. I don't know how this will finally be resolved.

Side note anyone bit on their face, should have a plastic surgeon, not just any ER Dr treat them.
The bite on her cheek just scratched the surface and caused a bruise and swelling, the bottom teeth caught her under the chin, but that does not appear to be going to form a scar either. The bite on her arm is also not going to scar, so she was very fortunate it was not more serious. Needless to say that she no longer wants to be around dogs. The doctor said that he doubted there would be any scars, and so far the marks are fading.

Agreed! People think it's cute and call it "protective behavior" but it's not...it's possessive behavior. They consider themselves the pack alpha at that point. Big difference.

Dogs that are bred to protect livestock or humans don't bite unless they are pushed into it, backed into a corner and have no other option. They don't just start snapping and biting without much barking and posturing and being pushed into it.

Years ago the kids had a friend who's mom had acquired a female Rotty that had been given Schutzhund training, (not by her ).
She told me a story about this dog that she thought was hilarious, but raised my hackles.
Now I considered this woman a very savvy animal owner, she trained and bred Quarter horses and was a no nonsense type of person. However she missed the boat on this one...she related how her husband had come home one evening when she and the kids were out and the rotty had him backed up against the wall, snarling and threatening to bite. Apparently no amount of soothing talk from him would make her back off until the mom and kids came home and released him.

To me there is something very wrong with a dog that doesn't recognize a family member and treats them like an intruder in their own home.
And also something wrong with a woman who thinks there's anything humorous in that scenario.
