I used to have a pair of Quaker parrots. We were moving from one base to another and I was putting the birds in the travel cage. My son opened the door to the hotel room and Gloria took off. She was the wilder of the two and I hadn't had her more than a few months. Her wings were clipped, but she was due again. She got enough height to reach a power line where she perched. I brought Sinbad out (he was completely hand tame and never left) to try to coax her back. It didn't work. She flew off across the parking lot and was gone. I was heartbroken. I knew she would never survive the winter. I had to report to my duty station and couldn't spend any time to look for her. I can only hope that some kind soul like you, Nyboy, took her in.
BTW, I had Sinbad from the time of his hatch. He was a gift to me from a bird breeder for helping her out. Gloria was wild caught and still had her import band.
parakeets come from Australia so they are somewhat hardy. i remember a story my grandmother told me of how she ended up with hers. they found Petey on a cold winter day shivering under their truck. he was talking so it seemed kind of weird when they got out of it and were walking to the house and heard the noise he was making. i thought she said he lived for about 19 years but i didn't think they lived that long.
