To clear up any misunderstanding of comparing apples to apples. I had already seel prepped the floor , all level , installed the new to the US for 2 months now patented Magnesium oxide underlayment ( very easy to cut , very light but very sturdy, waterproof , mold proof, easy to install ) already purchased the tile, modified morter, webbing tape, in other words everything already on site and ready just for the TILE TO BE INSTALLED. On the news this morning... for you coffe drinkers... Starbucks announsed that their coffee prices will be increased. :caf

THREE THOUSAND EIGHTY DOLLARS just to mud, lay the tile and grout, not including the work you've already done, plus you already have the tile? :th:he:th:hit.

Since you've done all that, might as well lay the tile yourself. Buy an inexpensive tile cutter from Harbor Freight and go for it.

I hired a guy with a general contractor's license for $1,200 ( $600 when he starts work then $600 when finished) to lay the tile as my wife needs around the clock assistance. He came out on Sat. at 11:15am ( 3 hours late ). I had to take my wife to the clinic to draw blood that took almost 3 hours. When we came back he layed about 20% of the floors in 4 1/2 hours and said he had to leave to take care of another job and said that he would be back on Sun. morning at 8AM. NO SHOW :he ... he called at 5 PM saying that he is takeing a holiday and will return on Thursday at 9 am. I checked on the already laid tiles and I found his work sorely lacking as a number of tiles were laid lower than the others creating a trip hazzard and the side adjoining the FM was being laid at a wierd angle and at a zig zag edge. Wife very unhappy !!! :rant So I e- mailed the bank to stop payment on the check. Our daughter , granddaughter and the 2 playmates arrived on Sun. afternoon to help care for grandma. : the On Tues. this guy tried to cash the check and his bank wouldn't cash it. He immediately calls me to say that my check bounced... I told him no, I had STOPPED PAYMENT on the check. :p He then agreed to come out within 2 hours to work on the kitchen tiles. I said OK, come on out. :\ When he arrived 4 hours later. I told him ... YOUR FIRED !!! :thumbsup He then wanted me to pay him the entire $1,200. I told him that I will mail him his check for 4 hours work at the minimum wage rate as his work is inferior and his work ethic is non existant. He left in a huff. :hit I will mail the check whenever I feel like it. As for the Harbor Freight tile cutter... they are a TOTAL JOKE in quality and a DANGER to anyone that uses it. :fl I already own a tile cutter and am now s l o w l y laying tiles for about 2 hours at a time as I have to attend to my wife's needs quite a few times per day. I have now layed about 80% of the kitchen floor after correcting the contractor's errors. Daughter helps quite a bit too in carring for my wife, shoping, preparing meals, etc.. The 2 playmates keeps grandma very entertained and our other granddaughter is a big help wherever she is needed. I am so TIRED that I can't even sleep for over 2 hours at a streatch. :caf

So it came down to doing the floor yourself, look at it this way, you're probably making a better job of it than someone hired :thumbsup.

Coming from someone who was in your wife's shoes a couple of years ago, you need to take a break, even if it's just a short break. While your daughter is there is there a friend you can go out, grab a coffee, shoot the breeze with, take an afternoon off and just unwind a bit? My hubby had a friend he went out and had coffee with, did him a world of good. Your wife's recovery is going to take some time, mine did. You have to look after yourself too, you NEED to take a break once in awhile, recharge your batteries.
