Best I can find says that the flies are attracted to the sweet smelling nectar from the flowers. It's odd I haven't had any problems with flies around my mints.
Thanks for the response...

I actually came onto this site looking for this - my mint has been wonderful - but now that it's in flower the flies are so thick that walking past it creates great swarms of them. Most frustrating. I don't think I'll let it get to this stage again!

@HanGarden Welcome to TEG. You can cut all the blooms of now. It wont hurt the mint. They do not need to go to seed. (They spread by runners.)

I don't have flies in my mint ... and I have LOT. I think all the flies are on the back porch trying to get into the house. To join the other 486 flies that are already in the house:barnie
As for the mint, cut the blooms (just remember the bees and butterflies love that mint too;))

@Jeni Ann, here's a trick I learned from my moms little neighbor boy- when his mother observed him poking holes in the screen and inquired as to what the heck he was doing, he said "I'm lettin' the flys back out mama".
Try it and report back here when you get the results. :D

Js23, my mint looks exactly like the picture you posted! I just realized that the flies were resting on the flowers. I guess I will be trimming some blooms later today.

Totally forgot about this thread.
This year, there are so many different things on the flowers!
