I put the 4th and last coat of polyurethane on the floor today. I used water based, so not bad fumes and it won't yellow the floors in later years. Friday I built pantry shelves, then picked up DD at her house, we went to Tyler and picked up DSIL and grand daughter and drove to our old house. DH had picked up the U-Haul Friday afternoon, so when we got up Saturday morning, we loaded up a bedroom set, leaving room for Mom's things.

A couple from church with their two kids came to help pack and in 45 minutes we were on our way to northeast Texas. We stopped several times along the way so Mom could get out and stretch her legs, bathroom break and DD, due with our 2nd granddaughter in 3 weeks, could do the same. We had lunch in Tyler and then drove to the assisted living place. I took Mom in the Buick, so she could ride more comfortably.

In Tyler, DSIL stopped for his car and DD drove it to their home, she was tired! We unloaded Mom's furniture and set it up, hung her clothes, made her bed and made sure she was ok for the night. Then we went to our new house and DSIL saw the floor for the first time since I had them half laid. He was speechless, then Wow! Wow! He couldn't believe how good they turned out. We set up the bedroom set and took the U-Haul to turn it in.

This morning, I fine sanded the floors and put on the last coat of poly. I left at 1:45 and went to see Mom. She had been unpacking and had the place looking good. She said the food was good and everyone was real nice to her.

So, back to the pantry........there is a closet off the kitchen that I decided to make into a pantry. You know how you nail up support boards on the wall to lay shelf boards on? Well.....I couldn't find any studs to nail to! :barnie I poked holes all over the durn place, but no studs. Another mobile home mystery, where the devil are the studs? Best I could figure is maybe there was a floor plate and ceiling plate that the sheetrock was nailed to and toss in the door frame for support. :idunno

What to do? I cut a couple of inches off four 8' 2x4's so I could stand them up in the pantry. I painted them white because that is what I had on hand. I stood them up in the corners and they fell against the walls. I had some L shaped brackets so I nailed one on each end of 2x4's cut for braces. I needed an extra set of hands to hold the corner 2x4's while I nailed the braces on, to keep them from falling on me, so I used my feet.

I got the first two braces on, notched a shelf to fit and nailed it on. At least the corner 2x4's wouldn't fall on me!

After I nailed the braces up using the brackets, I toe-nailed a 2 1/2" nail to provide added strength.

While I nailed up one end of the brace, I used a scrap of floor wood to hold up the other end. Note the nail to keep it from slipping.

And finished, with shelves! The pantry is 34" deep. I left 7" in the front without a shelf, at least until I get it all loaded up. I gotta see how far I can reach! I used yellow paint because I had a small can of it in the garage.

Sounds like your mom will settle in and make some friends in her new place. That's real good news!

DH made me a pantry cupboard out of our hall closet also. I don't know where we would have fit the food in the regular kitchen cupboards.( It is possible that I may have wee bit too many dishes.)
We have studs to nail to though, so dh didn't have to be as creative as you.

Bay, how do you know how to do things? You did this all by yourself huh. Are you sure you weren't a carpenter in your other life? I can't even change a light bulb! Last week the light bulb in our floor lamp in our bedroom went out. I waited until my husband came home and he realized it was out and changed it! Haha Ok, maybe I could have done it but was too lazy to climb on a bar stool to reach the cabinet on top of the fridge where the light bulbs are. ;)
