There have been times we did not regularly use the dishwasher even if we had it. There may not have been enough dishes to be worth running it. Or the boys needed experience in learning how to wash dishes. One got a job in high school washing pots and pans at a restaurant to keep himself in spending money. It can be a useful skill.

Although there are only two of us most days, we usually run the dishwasher. We typically eat three meals a day at home. That's different than when we were both working. I still wash the pots and pans by hand, along with some plastic stuff we don't trust in the dishwasher. How else am I going to get my fingernails clean?

I've made my dislike dishwasher comments before. I grew up with no dishwasher so therefore didn't feel they were necessary. Besides, its seems that you have to rinse them by hand first and the machine is loud and runs a long time. On large family dinners I wash, someone else, rinses and another person dries them. We are able to make quick work of all those dirty dishes and have fun chit chating.

The newer ones are not noisy. We keep adding dishes as we use them and wash once full. I like the idea of them being more sterile, besides the actual washing. And the unsightly dish drain on the counter is annoying. You do have to rise them to get the food off so it doesn't dry on. But a quick rinse is not the same as washing.

Major, so glad you get your bonus, plus the timber sale check sounds like a real blessing for you and your family. :)

As far as doing dishes, to each his own.
I have a dishwasher but would rather do them by hand. My washer is not state of the art or quiet and I have to regularly rewash too many dishes, even when they are pre-rinsed to make it worthwhile to me.
And a new machine is not worth the expense for me when I have a list of other projects waiting to be funded.

Hot water and soap, hot water rinse and dried with a fresh clean towel = plenty sterile for me.
No drainer either, just one of those mats and the dishes are put away immediately leaving the counter clear.
I like looking out the window and letting my mind wander while I tidy up. Good time for reflection or planning.

I totally agree with you Thistle. I do dishes really fast. Being a neat freak, I let them sit for a few minutes to drip dry before I dry them off. Really not that much work at all.

i will always enjoy playing in hot soapy water i don't care how old or decrepit i might get. :) i do find it very peaceful and therapeutic and have a nice view out the front window of the sunset or trees or flowers.

it's also good to be able to help out here because i don't much like dusting.

germs, i agree with you there, you don't get sterile even from a dishwasher, no matter how hot it gets it won't kill everything if there is no pressure and it isn't long enough. the key is that it rinses stuff off and then dries it. you can do that well enough in a sink IMO without all that gadgetry and plumbing and noise.

today Mom left in a hurry after frosting some cakes and making the frosting. so she felt bad about leaving me a sink full of stuff to wash. i just use it as a break from what i'm doing when i feel like it so there is no real problem to me at all. as long as she doesn't want something done "Right now!" i'm usually ok with whatever she wants me to do. i just work it into my schedule and she knows it's better if she doesn't nag or stand over me ... makes for a good system and relationship. IMO :)
