Forgot to mention, no roos.
You need to leave something for Monty to do!
LOL It was his plan to get rid of the roo's! So it's his fault he is bored. :D If I told you how I got chickens in the first place you would DIE laughing!

I can tell all of them apart except the 'Lorps. I have even named a few of them. The reds are Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Ginger. The Amberlinks are Goldilocks, Lil' Goldie, Eagle Eye, Tail Gunner and two yet un-named. The older they get, the easier it is to tell who is who.

my hubby needs to listen to the voices in your head dew. I've been after him about a shade over the coop for awhile now. so far it's not happening.
when It gets hot enough, i'll drag that ladder out there & make it happen. i'm not real good w/ladders so I've been procrastinating

I planted 2 baby memosa trees along the west side this spring. They're safely inside tall hardware cloth tubes and have already grown about a foot. I figure by this time next year (or the one after that) they'll be providing some very nice shade. Until then, I prop pallets against the pine tree trunks for them to get behind.

Ive got a cover on most of my run, which helps with the shade, but in the afternoon when it really gets hot it provides very little shade. I need something on the southwest side to block the sun from that angle. I hung up some old scrap plywood to help, but I really need to come up with something that covers a bigger area. That side is right on someone elses property line so Im a little limited. Probably more plywood or siding so its permanent. The fence is strong enough that wind should not be a problem.

As long as they are not locked in my run but can get out to the electric netting area mine can get shade so its not too bad. And Ive been known to wet the ground on really hot days to cool it off for them. Ever see a chicken take a dirt bath in mud?

I lost two hens last year when we set records above 110. Heat is a real danger. Take it seriously.
