So I ate one of my favorite apples, cosmic crisp, and 2 of the seeds showed signs of germinating.
Ha! I will make me own cosmic crisp apple tree to eventually feast on...

The first seed that germinated in a petri dish I planted in a new pot&soil right in the middle, February 2.
On February 6 (day 1) a green bud/bulb started to show in the soil.
On February 8 (day +2) something was starting to flap out some big leaves. Almost 1 inch tall
On February 9 (day +3) it grows and grows insanely...
On February 11 (day +5) some flappy leaves... Almost 2 inches tall
On February 12 (day +6) something new and red comes out in the middle... Almost 3 inches tall!!!
On business for a few days I come back:
On February 18 in the morning (day +12) About 5 inches tall!
on February 18 in the evening.... Help! Another half an inch, 6 1/2 inches tall!

I wonder how long it takes until I hear "feed me, feed me, feed me..."
I told my friend if you suddenly don't hear from me anymore, check with the police and if you try to get into my apartment,
but the roots are blocking access, I probably have been eaten up by this thing while asleep....
(Take things with a little humor is always important to me)

WHAT IS IT?

This thing, whatever alien outer space thingy it is, it is grows so fast that you cannot only "hear it" but just by looking at it you can actually see it growing!
Anyone know what it is? Cell division at hypersonic speed.
I've never in my life seen a plant grow that fast and I have lived in the tropics.
For sure it ain't no Apple tree from the seed I planted!

By the time I get some answers here I will post a "progress" picture!

sad to say that apple seeds from an apple you like may not be at all like what you expect the several years later when it finally flowers and bears fruit. apples are complicated genetically. enjoy the plant, sapling, tree - and yes, some will grow very fast. i think you could grow a reasonable fence/hedge out of them from seeds within three years. at least that was my experience when i planted a bunch of seeds and then was going to move them later and didn't. had plants 7ft tall by the end of the 2nd summer.

I love those Cosmic Crisp apples too. They remind me very much of the Rome apples which were my favorites for many years, and it wouldn't surprise me if there is some Rome in their pedigree. I loved Cosmic Crisp so much that I tried to buy a tree... but I didn't have a high enough security clearance.

That being said... is that the same seedling in all of the photos? Because while the 2nd in the bottom row looks like an apple seedling, the one just before it looks like chard.

I had a lot of apple seedlings one year under my Cortland tree, but as @flowerbug mentioned, your chance of getting anything like the original apple are slim. All commercial apples are hybrids, propagated by clones & grafted onto special root stocks bred for that purpose.

Attached a picture (day +13)taken not even 24 hours yet after the picture (day +12) taken as shown in previous original post...
What is this thing?
The speed of growth is mind-boggling.

I'll try to keep you updated daily hopefully it will not devour me one night...

This does not at all look like an apple leaf. Looks more like a sweet potato.

i forgot to mention above that it is not normal for an apple seed to sprout without being chilled for a while first (called stratification). if that chill has happened in cold storage or a fridge i don't know if that counts.

Update ~14 days later... Definitely not an an Apple tree!
Must've been something in the soil I bought. "Miracle grow potting mix" so I shouldn't be surprised that some kind of miracle happened....
Odd is that I put only one seed in the pot, exactly the center.
However my cosmic crisp seed that I had intentionally planted also show up recently to say hello. see in the following post
