I made a gate archway out of a cattle panel and I need to plant a fast growing vine on it. It's in full sun and preferably something with flowers. We are in zone 5. What would YOU plant??

That's a tough one, bc many fast-growing vines become invasive. My first thought was clematis. I love mine, which is climbing along a piece of fence on the south side of my garage. You could plant morning glory but don't put in any wild strains bc they WILL take over.
Maybe a combination of several vines. Certainly you could plant scarlet runner beans and harvest from them later in the summer.
REALLY make sure that you don't let any vining weeds grow on this. Many send out runners underground and they will attach to your other vines. You pull them out and end up ripping out your domesticated vines at the same time.
How about planting a thornless berry?

I plant morning glory that becomes quite colorful on my chicken coop fence. It does reseed with a less robust variety which can become a pain though not really invasive . Of course it has to be reseeded every year. WHat about a climbing every blooming rose?

Hello Petey :frow I have planted this Blackeye Susan Vine on a trelis by my back steps, south side of house and full sun for 3 summers. I will plant it again. I am also zone 5. It is an annual and FAST growing. And very easy , nearly carefree. If I did not trim it back no idea how long the vines would get !!! 1st photo does not show it when COVERED in yellow blooms. 2nd photo, closeup of the flower.

Clematis was my first thought, I have a gorgeous one in the greenhouse that I need to move out. I believe they want their roots shaded, so a well placed rock or maybe some marigolds around it would be good.

Another thought was... sweet potatoes. They have the most gorgeous flowers, grow like crazy, AND you get food at the end of the season. :) You can buy slips (though depending on where you are they might not ship for another few weeks) or start your own from a store-bought organic potato (which won't have been treated with anything to stop it sprouting).

What about honeysuckle?

I'm fond of cypress vine (aka. cardinal vine). Very quick to fill in, nice color contrast and self-sowing, but not too hard to manage.
