I had no problems with any other subjects either, just math.

I look back and feel like I was always slinking in the door and sliding into my chair, trying to fade into the background, hoping the teacher would not notice me.
That seemed to work alright. But they must have noticed my lack of understanding by the grades I got on my report card.

Ha!

When I took Statistics, pocket calculators were new. The final rolled around - remember, a B was required of me !

I was in a panic and afraid the battery might die. So ... I found and bought a new battery to have in my shirt pocket.

The battery never did die! I had that calculator for years, the battery never died!. I lost the calculator, probably still have the battery somewhere ...

Anyway, I get to class and realize that there is a screw to take out to get to the battery. I've got 50 minutes for the test and I'm imagining breaking my thumbnail trying to get that screw out!

Thistle, that teacher should have been fired! At the least they should have been trained how to talk to children. You would think that common sense should have been enough.

Thistle, (the counselor is coming out in me) did you feel that way when you first started school, or did it start after that horrible teacher that shamed you?
I have come to believe that girls go through some sort of horrible reckoning when they get about 4th to 6th grade, when they realize there are hurdles put in front of them that have nothing to do with how good or smart or pretty they are.
A few brave girls take it as a challenge to just try harder and succeed, but the rest of us go through the remainder of our lives knowing we will never quite live up to our own juvenile expectations.
All in all, it's a good thing for boys that this happens; otherwise civilization as we know it would not exist.:p

No @so lucky, I was a shy quiet kid, but pretty confident with learning until that day, although I was acutely aware of my confusion in what we were learning in math right then.
I think it was the embarrassment at finding out I was getting a D and the humiliation of every other kid in the class knowing it.

Okay, @so lucky .

Continue down this path and we will need to have a discussion on: Cuteness inequality. Income inequality. Shortened lifespans ...

who cannot remember what he expected from life in the 3rd & 4th grades but does recall that he was paddled in both those years, by female teachers

I'm sure you had it coming @digitS' ! ...Just kidding...

I think I probably went through my early years in some sort of oblivious state.
In fact I'm sure I did. And not even my earliest years.
For instance I was a good runner, and spent a lot of free time running in the hills around our house, but I didn't even know there was a girls track team in high school that I could have been on until my junior year. And since I graduated as a 3 year grad (not because I was so excellent in academics, it was solely due to the school systems laxity where I attended) I didn't have time left to try out for it as a senior. :\
I was pretty much disconnected and just counting the days until I was out of there.

It's okay though, I can see clearly now, the rain is gone. :p Ha.

They never beat it outta me!!

I still know how to use 4 Popsicle sticks that will spring apart at just the right moment, before class starts - btw!

And, I still know how to pop my knuckles ... but don't do it because it hurts. Who would have thought that she would take offense to the sound just because she was reading?!
