I could never understand the gum issue, why do teachers hate gum?
Teachers, custodians, bus drivers.... it never seems to stay in the mouth. Stuck under desks, chairs, floor etc.... those that keep it in tend to smack and chew LOUDLY!

I was the only teacher that allowed chewing gum at my school.

Rules were:
1. Gum must be wrapped in waste paper before throwing in the trash.
2. If I see it or hear it, you must throw it away PROPERLY. (seeing chewing is not seeing gum)
3. You may get another piece if you wish right away.
4. You may not give others gum unless you have enough to share with the whole class.
5. Gum is not allowed when singing or running. Gum must stay in the classroom (other teachers seemed to have an eagle eye for gum chewing even if they missed seeing bullying).

I seldom had problems with gum in the wrong places. If it happened once or twice early in the year, class pressure insured it didn't happen again. Eventually, the teachers actually voted on and then posted signs announcing that we were a "gum-free school". Except for inside my class, of course.

Ha! That was cute! Loved the kids accent!

Now if your teacher had been smart, instead of paddling you she could have used that as an opportunity for teaching a little physics. She could have had you study different uses for stored energy... and gain an ally instead of encouraging resentment.

I did really well in math up to the 5th grade and we moved and was behind when I got to the new school and had a hard year. Then, we moved to another state for the 7th grade and was behind again, and then moved to a different town for the 8th grade and was in public school the first month and moved to Catholic private for the rest of the year. Then, I really was behind and moved for the 12th grade to Kansas and was told I had so many credits I only needed to go to school half a day. What a mess it was, but I homeschooled my kids and I could only go so far and needed help. I bought a course that has DVD teachers and they have learned and test well when they have been tested.
