I know that I have to put potatoes, carrots, beets, turnips, radishes, garlic and onions in pots because they can't get through the soil here.

I've been digging a trench, filling it with peat moss and planting my potatoes in the peat moss.

So just about 15-20 minutes ago I was sitting in my bed and I got an alert for an earthquake. Sure enough my bed felt like it was swaying in the wind. This is only the 2nd time I have ever felt an earthquake.

The was a tsunami warning earlier today for part of the northern CA coast and up into Oregon!

I grew some wonderful cherry tomatoes a couple years back. They grow really well here and because we have a fairly short season I don't grow steak tomatoes. Anyhow, each plant produced around 150 tomatoes and they were so good. I wish I would have written down the exact variety!

I love growing cherry tomatoes. It makes snacking so easy. My grandkids enjoy the cherry tomatoes when we're out in the garden during the Spring and Summer. My youngest granddaughter will go look for the tomatoes and let me know if she sees any. I told her that if she spots them it's fine to eat them but she always has to ask me first. I think it's sweet but it's not necessary for her to ask me for permission to pick and eat tomatoes.

Amending your soil will take time and work, but you have your chicken composters to help you. Results will be amazing.

considerate. it is nice of her to ask just in case you had some plans to have some later that day.

instead of doing a lot of work to fight the soil at your place also consider your attempts to grow whatever you might like to eat and see if it will do well enough without you having to do all that extra work. some varieties may do better than others. keep trying some new ones each year and eventually you will have plenty of garden plants that will do ok enough. in diversity you can thrive.

that is pretty much how i do things here but i also have a picky eater who doesn't like a lot of things i would try to grow otherwise. i like almost any vegetable and i really like leaf lettuces and chards which will all do ok here, turnips, etc. Mom doesn't like any of those...

the end result is that we still have plenty of food we can grow and it keeps me busy enough and then when i keep returning those plant debris to the gardens each fall they help improve the gardens for the coming years. it doesn't have to all be done at once, it can be a gradual thing. give it time. nobody is going to judge your results as much as you will, so try to just enjoy what you can and let the rest go. next year is always around the corner and it can be a new adventure.

alert for an earthquake

Returning from running an errand and sat down to yesterday's lunch – starting the tablet, I saw that news!

My aunt, uncle and a cousin lived in Cresent City during the '62 Anchorage Earthquake and Tsunami. The cousin had recently married and moved to a house not far from the harbor. He and his wife were awakened by their house rocking. They waded out the front door after pushing a log away from it. The house was carried some distance and ended up in the pool at "Sea Wonders Alive." They walked some distance to his parents' home. Several people were swept out to sea.

Yes, I was very interested in reading yesterday's reports. I was a kid in Medford Oregon in '64 but moved to Arcata later in the 60's. The epicenter was just a few miles out in the ocean from there.

You Can mix chicken manure with your soil in about 3 months, horse manure takes a little bit longer.

Husband and I tilled a small area of the garden and we're now filling it hugelkultre style. I will post a picture after I get it done. I'm going to try to get the stacked raised metal bed filled before I post the pictures.
