I have some pots I used last year for tomatoes/peppers. I would like to plant peas in them this year, if it isn't too late. The variety is Green Arrow, and the pots are about 18" deep and 12" wide. Is this doable? Would I do only one plant per pot? What would be a good support for the peas? I was thinking that a 48" long skinny dowl would work, but this is outside of what I've done before.

Thank you! :D

I say try it... couldn't hurt!

I was told to plant peas 1" apart. So you could fit maybe 10 in there. Put a little netting between the supports for them maybe.

I'd like to hear how these do.

I've never tried it before but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I think you could probably put at least 6 per pot (maybe more). If you lined the pots up you could use some string or twine to make a trellis for them.

Kind of like that. I think something 5' long might be better as you will lose 18" of the dowel in the pot.
Good luck! :)

Peas like cool roots. Containers create warm roots. You can try it but there is probably a *reason* they are not normal container plants. Anything you can do to keep the containers shaded/insulated would help.

Good luck, have fun,

:happy_flower Over here in the UK we can buy seeds of a pea called "Twinkle" which has been created especially for growing in pots. It's quite productive & you sow them about 2" apart. Children love them & they taste good raw. I have grown them in pots in a cold frame in winter -- a mild one, not like the very cold one we had this year. I'm sure you could get them from Thompson & Morgan in the US. :happy_flower

Hope this helps :frow

To help with the root issue... get a bottom watering pot, and mulch the tops! That would probably help out a bit and give you a better shot.
