About 30 years ago a friend bought a very nice pedigreed German Shepard. She took excellent care of him, fed him the best food on the market, and when he was 5 they had to have him put down due to cancer that was spreading rapidly into all his organs.
Seems to be no rhyme or reason, but in this case it was probably something genetic.

1). It was stated and implied that IF I made this dog live outside, all his allergies would disappear. This dog has recognized and corrected allergies-has nothing to do with inside or outside.
2). I did not state or imply that you pay no attention to your dogs. Surely you have to agree that dogs outside do not get the attention that inside dogs do.
3). To allow dogs to be unsupervised (run free) in Indiana is against the law. Had a neighbor that would turn his dogs out at nights to get "free" food. It was explained to him that if he wanted to see them, they had better stay on HIS place. I'd have applied SSS-as would other neighbors although not sure about the last S. I've lost all the chickens so his animals can eat free that I'm going to. Also illegal for dogs to kill native animals.
@Smart Red the mix seemed to do a lot of good after one dose. He will get another one this afternoon.

@journey11 My folks moved south to get relief from arthritis. Their dog (they got it there) fought it. When they died, moved the dog north, her arthritis went away-go figure. Life can be strange.

@seedcorn , I respect and like you. Not trying to start a dispute.
What I related about the Bassetts was neither a statement or implication of your situation, just an anecdote about house dogs that got healthier after living outdoors for 18 months. They didn't have allergies when I took over their care, so it wasn't anything to do with your situation. Sorry if it seemed like an indictment.

I still don't agree with your #2 position in my case, and obviously can only speak to my own situation. My dogs get lots of attention, even tho' they are outside dogs because I'm an outside person, and they are with me when I work on the property, and with me on walks around the neighborhood. They go mtn. biking with us, and camping too.
On winter days they lay on their bed in the house for a few hours at a time, but go out with me and spend the majority of winter days out, same as me.
And they sleep outdoors in their kennel, with a heated bed in the winter.

I hope you find a remedy for your dogs problems, I know it must be frustrating.
