I tried digging up my rosemary plant and wintering it over, in the house. Today I have pronounced it dead. It was okay till last week- and then the end was near. I was hoping to be able to pop it into the garden come spring... Anybody had any luck bringing this into the house?

Poor rosemary! I'm glad it was your rosemary plant, and not your Aunt Rosemary Lesa!

Maybe it doesn't take transplanting well? If you could grow it in a pot and then bring it in, not having to disturb the roots, it might do better. Talking about your next one of course. :)

You know it looked pretty good and got some new growth. I have had it inside since late October, so it was doing pretty well... I liked having it in my little tea garden, but I will try it in a container and see if it fares any better. I just don't have much luck bringing plants in. I am watching my Eugenia topiary doing their dance of death, too. Oh well, try, try again!

Well I'm sure you can make it happen Lesa.
I have a friend with a black thumb who bought a potted rosemary for a little Christmas tree in 2010 and she still has it. She said it didn't look good enough to use for Christmas this year, but I was shocked she had kept it alive.

Cause of death?....
overwatering?
not enough light?
animal attack?

Wondering what went wrong. It can get pretty cold so probable not that.

I agree about the original pot idea. maybe starting it where you keep it will prolong life. Get a pot big enough and be careful about overwatering.

lesa,

I haven't had any success with bringing a potted rosemary indoors. Years ago I used to bring them in before the winter, but somehow before Spring they would all turn brown and die. Wasn't sure if I over watered or not enough sunlight. I know they have hardy varieties of rosemary. I think I might plant some this spring to grow outdoors all year. Theirs one called "Arp" that's quite hardy.
You should consider planting some hardy rosemary in the garden ;) .

Hope this helps!!

Interesting, greenthumb- I didn't know that...I will look into finding that. And catjac, I will cut it back and give it another chance, what have I got to lose? Too cold to take the dirt out to the compost pile anyway!

I have found it takes more water in the house than you would think. Also it gets white fuzz on it. I set it in the tub and give it a shower about every other week. Once you set it outside again ( I keep it potted) it soon looks healthier and green again.:tools

Don't know if this will help, but I read somewhere that rosemary wants to get most of its water through it's leaves from the air, not the ground. Might be something to consider when trying to keep it indoors. :idunno
