Hope so, Mary. If this is a way to stay limber and exercise the cardiovascular system, I'm okay.

If 5 times a week is needed, I haven't missed 1 day in over 4 weeks, so if something comes up, I'm golden. If 30 minutes is adequate, I can cover 2 miles outdoors in 45. I'm slower indoors with all the turning so there is no need to worry about wearing out the carpet. If a pulse of 100+ per minute is good enough, I can hit that with the higher outdoor speed or indoors by absurdly waving my arms :).

I won't be entering the Olympic Games so there is no reason to risk life and limb. I just want to be able to do something more than toddle about and sit down. That would likely be a short road. There are discoveries out there for me to make, if I can just get down to the intersection and hang a left.

Uphill :eek: I think you are amazing. Two blocks and I am hurting and tired. Sure hope the weight loss helps. Still, I am trying for a tad more each day. Keep up the good work Steve . :thumbsup

I have found that it is remarkably easy to control my heart rate on this 1 mile, indoor walk. Arm movement is the key to get it up to a reasonable level.

At rest, my heart rate is about 68/minute. Below is a list of these "activities" and the results. You will see how they fit better with the indoors and would be a little embarrassing, out in public ;). I will name one, "the move," for lack of a better term. It's just doing a little side-stepping, short & longer strides, and kinda prancing. I start my walk with 1/4 mile of just walking. Then, I make changes :).

  • Walking : 86/minute
  • The Move : 94/minute
  • Lifting arms 280 times : 104/minute
  • Lifting arms 480 time : 115/minute
Checked the pulse several times during the last couple of minutes as I'm finishing the mile.

Am I counting lifts while I'm walking? NO ! I have landmarks :). "There's the door frame, Steve, touch it!" "Middle of the room! Lift!"

Between lifts, the hands come down, at least to my chest. By the way, I tried lifting my arms one at a time. I could tell that it wasn't making much difference.

A can of pumpkin would be great! But then he would put those calories he just burned if he ate pie. :(

Remember it's 80% diet and 20% exercise. :rolleyes:

Sometimes, usually summer, I'm carrying something around and I'm thinking, "This isn't that awkward." Then I wonder how far I'd get with it on Mao's Long March.

If you remember, that was 6,000+ miles and over 1 year for the foot soldiers ...

So, you don't think I'm doing enuf with a heart rate of 115? Nothing was done with medical supervision and I've read some criticism and that a different scale could be used. I'm within the Cardio Training and beyond the Weight Control. (Don't imagine I'm burning many calories in 30 minutes ;).) In addition to the boredom, I suppose I could get more outta it.
