I'm boring it's straight 8s here. After the gherkin debacle of 2010 I went back to just buying cuke starts. Those and the burpe picklers (drawing a blank on variety). They do well and everybody likes them. I usually plant 4 of each and have plenty of them by mid summer.
However I have a bunch volunteers this year. Didn't pull them yet so will be interesting.
Good call on moisture control. I mulched mine with grass clippings and straw to keep weeds down and the cukes off the soil. I had so many I would feed the neighbors chickens by the bucketful I had so many. They'd appear and swell to size so fast I couldn't stay on top of them. Split them lengthwise and the fence over they'd go.
From then on that's been my cucumber care plan
