We won't be seeing stars tonight, there are dark clouds and a weak attempt of thunder with light rain. :) What does far back in the holler mean?

Do you live in the US? Far back in the holler refers to living between two mountains that create a deep crevice in between them(a hollow or otherwise known as a "holler") wherein the sun only shines for part of the day, if at all, depending on the tree cover....and there's a LOT of tree cover here. I live in WV, The Mountain State, the only one in the US that lies fully within the Appalachian Mountain Range.

Have you ever heard the term "redneck"? That term was actually coined right here in WV during labor disputes in the coal mines. It's a term that's largely misused nowadays, as is the term "holler". ;)

Here in southern West Virginia, the term “redneck” means something more than a rural, working-class white person. It’s symbolic of the solidarity and defiance demonstrated by the thousands of coal miners and their families who fought in the West Virginia Mine Wars.

Interesting fun fact. They added another trait to hard working farmer.

The term characterized farmers having a red neck caused by sunburn from hours working in the fields. A citation from 1893provides a definition as "poorer inhabitants of the rural districts ... men who work in the field, as a matter of course, generally have their skin stained red and burnt by the sun, and especially is this true of the back of their necks

Marie, do you live very close to the ocean?

I will yield to residents or previous residents of the part of the US where they use the word holler for its definition. But, I wanted to make the observation that many of the mountains there were not what I was used to, visiting from the Inter-mountain West. There are Steep Sides to some of those hills and ridges!

It's easy to understand how someone running on top of a ridge, narrow as it may be, might roll off into a canyon, be swept further down in a cascading stream, carried into a river, floating on down the Mississippi until the torrent widens and slows and he or she can make it to shore and be revived by a good cup of coffee.

;) Steve
No Steve, that would be real good, love sea air.

No worries. I used to belong to a UK garden forum and I was just as lost....the tea and meal times, the different vernacular, the incredible lack of personal freedom(jumped on with all four feet for feeding table scraps to chickens, using a chainsaw without a license to do so~that's not required here~ free ranging chickens, heating with wood without government regulations, our ownership of guns and free use of them, etc.)

They really despise Americans over there, don't they? ;) I currently belong to a UK farming forum and it's the same.....they really hate the "Yanks" on that forum. It's strange to me, that level of animosity. I just can't muster up a feeling that strong towards other countries and nationalities.

@Beekissed I am of the opinion that we are all individuals, so don't dislike anyone because of where they are from. What I do pass judgement on is the nature of of a person. A few examples of what I could dislike in a human, aggressiveness, selfishness, greed, ego maniacs or boastful.. I have met a few decent Americans and hopefully will get to know a few more in here, even if it's only online ;) . I've not really noticed that people here in uk have really objected to Americans, but sadly I have come across racism & avoid these people as much as possible.

Restrictions here are getting even more unbearable, even the easy going are getting fed up with all the rules, it's kind of like living in a very strict school. The heads and teachers can do as they like but us children/old age pensioners must be good and do exactly as we are told. :bow

It's getting that way here, slowly but surely. Especially now with the WHO calling the shots on disease protocols instead of our own country governing with some common sense.
