Here is Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. Usually, I'm showing what it's like in Antarctica but there probably are no gardeners in Antarctica ;). It will soon be spring in Yellowknife and there should be someone planting garden peas.

GardenGeisha, would you tell them they've missed out by not planting on March 17th?

By the way, it is only 1F in Fairbanks right now. I think that may indicate how the weather has been cooler the further west one goes this winter. Whatever the case, the gardeners and everyone else, have had a very difficult winter in Alaska.

Personally, I'm expecting it to be as warm as 49 this week here! We will get winter behind us yet!!

Steve,

Please read more carefully. I noted to the person who claimed March 17 was too early to plant peas that that might be true for HER zone, not mine. She made it sound like it was too early to plant peas ANYWHERE on March 17, and that is simply not true, and that is why I posted the links from seed companies and others who concur that our calendar's March 17 is a fine date to plant them. The garden information I posted was for the continental U.S., not for Yellowknife or the Northwest Territories.

I think Steve was just trying to agree by saying not everyone is ready, and some are way past! So very different everywhere in the northern hemisphere. He does back himself up with GREAT information and statistics! :D

Which reminds me, Steve... were you ever an english teacher????

I am quite well aware that there are different growing zones and not everyone can plant on March 17. But the person who said that March 30 is too late, is wrong. As I pointed out, that MAY be true for her Zone, but it is not true for all zones. I am not an idiot. I realize that the Northwest Territories and Antarctica are cold. I found Steve's post quite condescending.

And here is a post from Victoria, which explains that planting sweet peas as early as the ground can be worked, say St. Patrick's Day in most parts of the United States, ensures more cold-hardy, vigorous plants that bloom more quickly than those planted later.

GG, I really don't think it was meant like that at all. Steve just loves sharing information. He was most likely trying to share it with the person who mentioned it was way to late. To expand one's perception. I really hope you aren't offended, because knowing Steve he would absolutely not try to come across that way at all.

Well, if he's an English teacher, I think he should read more carefully. :>)

Garden geisha, I suspect you have taken offense where none was intended.
Steve is one of the nicest people on this forum and I'm sure he had no intent to insult or be condescending.
Sometimes it's difficult to read a persons humor in the text since there's no body language or voice tone to get a clue from.

Vfem,

If you are correct and Steve was simply sharing the information with the person who suggested it was too late to plant sweet peas, then why did he feel the need to post this:

"GardenGeisha, would you tell them they've missed out by not planting on March 17th?"

(When I had clearly stated in my earlier post that the planting time was dependent on one's growing zone). That's why I feel he needs to read more carefully. Had he read what I posted, he would not have had to ask that question. But I guess he's just not a careful reader. Oh, well.
