I take it out of my cow and goat pens and put it in the chicken run so they can pick through it and bust it up. It only takes them a few days to do the work.
I have been using straw for years as mulch, organic mater in gardens, goat barn, chicken coop, and in my compost piles. Luckily the owner of a straw blanket manufacturer is an old fishing buddy of mine and I get unlimited tuuckfulls of chopped straw anytime. This chopped straw is between 2" and 3" long and is the best additive to my garden I have ever used.
I'm starting a new 60'x30' strawberry patch and I have 6" of the chopped straw piled up out there right now. Today I will till it in. I've never grown strawberries before so I'm sure I'll have questions.
