Suggestions for cool weather trellis plants?

I have some pole beans and cukes on trellises right now but I'm trying to plan a use for those trellises when they peter out. I can grow peas on the cuke trellis but I'm sort of stumped for another vining plant that will do well in cool weather on the bean trellis. Any suggestions?

In the coldest part of Winter it gets around the 40s and 50s in the daytime. Frosts are rare and the ground never freezes. Crops grown elsewhere in the Fall will grow all Winter here but there aren't many cool weather plants that form vines.

Don't really know but how about squash. There is that summer squash, Tromboncino.

They may like warmer temperatures but could be okay with cooler. There's the English Marrow. I don't mean to pick on English summer weather but it can't be much more comfortable than a San Diego winter . . .

Pumpkins grew much better during our cool June than my winter squash. They are a Cucurbita pepo and that species includes a good many summer squashes. I can't quite say the same for my zucchini, however.

If vining summer squashes do well for you, you will need to work on a new name since the terms summer & winter won't be useful in San Diego.

And they call New Jersey the garden state. Sorry, I've got nothing else that vines except the peas.

I'm looking for something kind of similar to you! I live in a cooler climate where the temperature drops to the 40's during the winter, especially during the early morning hours. My husband and I have some trellises facing east on our house, so when the temperature is the coolest, the plants get the most sun.

The trellises were there when we bought the house! If it were up to us, we would have put them on the western part of our home. That's where we normally entertain guests. We have our pool, our patio furniture , and our grill on that part of the house.

But, since they are on the eastern part of the house, we are stuck in a dilemma. We have tried to grow several types of spinach, peas, and even morning glory flowers. We haven't been successful with any of them.

Do any of you all have any ideas? Are our trellises just decorative, or should we move them to the western part of our house?

That's a whle different proposition. If you want decorative vines there are a lot of them that will do well in only morning sun or even full shade. Don't forget, vines climb trees and trees give shade under them. This article discusses a few of them but you can google vines/shade and come up with more.

Ha! I was thinking that same thing. My experience from when I lived in San Diego county is that it has the most beautiful weather of anywhere in the lower 48 states.

Maybe cucumber. In Louisiana we can plant cucumber as late as September.
