@Smart Red yes, you absolutely need more chickens. Get eye candy plus good layers. I love the Wyandottes because I get both. The dotties are not laying machines like a sex link, but they lay good enough for me. They are also nice sized birds and old hens make yummy soup.
@seedcorn retire those old hens to freezer camp and get some young chicks!

What a pretty flock you have Cane!
My flock is mostly Wyandottes too.
So far so good.

What is it with you guys and your sissy chickens that won't go out in the snow?:p
Mine are out every day, even in sub-zero temps.
Of course they have to if they want to eat, because I keep their food in the lean-to attached to the coop, and their heated water bowl is out there too.
Okay, I also shovel a big area for them to mill around in where I throw their boss and scratch...but, they're pretty tough birds even so...:D

I don't think it is the cold that keeps the flock inside. When the snow wasn't so deep, Gypsy shoveled an area for the birds to get to grass. They were outside, but only on the grass.

Mine will normally come out if it is not too much below 20 degrees or so. They certainly don't like the high winds, at any temperature. And they didn't want out on the single digit days we've had. But heaven forbid their toes touch that awful white stuff!! I tried to go out and shovel them a path today, but the snow is frozen solid after getting rained on and refrozen a couple days ago. No thaw in sight for the next 8 days. :( Off to the store for some more broccoli heads to hang inside the coop, I guess. I tried piercing an apple through and hanging it too. A chicken pinata of sorts. Now I can't find the string! :p

Mine are bantams. Not worth effort. Would make good chicken noodle soup. But........I married a city girl and once it is on place more than 5 seconds, it is pet. Lucky between picking up corn and being Wyandotte bantams, they eat very little.

I snapped a few picts of the chickens yesterday. Excuse the muddy mess, I'm pretty sure there isn't a clean, dry spot anywhere in VA right now. I'm SOOO looking forward to being able to spend more time with them once it gets a little warmer and dryer.

They are fine looking chickens and that isn't nearly as muddy a yard for them as I might have suspected, Cane'.

Have we talked about this before? Whatever are you going to do for new names?!

Will you go for something a little different like, 'pain?? I will go ahead and suggest a few but I'm limited in creativity. It had better be a group effort, I'm thinkin'!

Hasn't there been a "Sugar" -cane? How about: Hat'n'? Blow the feathers off of "Co." What could "Chi" be up to? They are all a little "Ar" . . .

Steve

LOL, yes - currently there is Nova, Sola, Raisin, Citizen, Lido, Candy, Anita (Ineeda), Ameri, Mexi, Ja-may, and Benzo.
The roo who had to go was Hurri - I'll probably re-use that one one day. This year I plan to add Sugar, Crackco and Puerto-ri to the Cane sisters. I Love 'Hat-n', that's going on the list!! 'Arr' is on the list too but it's going to have to wait - she'll have to be a really special chicken to pull off the eye patch and peg leg.
