Mary, the only examples of self-restraint I can think of over the last 6 month ..

. suggesting that DW not make brownies a few times.

Maybe also recently when I dropped a chocolate covered almond and did NOT apply the 5 second rule.

Steve ...
Way to go Steve. You needed to start somewhere!

I start at the same place or nearly so, every year!

With gaining a steady 2 1/2 pounds every "winter month," goofing off for the other 6 months might never happen! Oh I don't know. Maybe I should be willing to pay the price ...

In the UK, where they aren't afraid to talk about social class, musicians only have a 4 year shorter life than their fellow countrymen. I can't play music but keeping late hours and sitting around and twiddling my thumbs might be equivalent ...

Oh, the trade-offs ... ... ..!

The image in the first post...I think those are of cadavers, aren't they? Startling how displaced the first body is by the fat. I've seen that in processing chickens. The internal cavity fat pushes all the other organs aside and an overweight hen can't lay well because the fat obstructs the oviduct and they usually have pericarditis and fatty liver. The first woman, you can see her heart is enlarged too. Definitely thought provoking...and motivating...or depressing...depending on your bent. o_O

I have a friend who weighs over 400 lbs. She's just a very dear person and my heart aches for her how limited her life is by carrying all of that weight. She was abused as a child and grew up in poverty. I think psychologically that has contributed a lot to her weight gain. She is a school teacher and is very well liked by her students. I don't think she can afford gastric bypass or lap-band. About the only exercise she can tolerate now is swimming. She's in her mid-40's. I just pray she can find something to help her before it is too late.

3 people I know have went the surgery method. Less they change their life style-none did-the same weight gain is there.

I'm convinced (unless a medical condition, cousin had thyroid/diabetes problems) it's about your mind set. I need to lose 40# but I don't want to lose it bad enough to change much. So obviously it doesn't bother me........

Journey, a lot of obesity is due to emotional eating due to problems earlier.

seedcorn, I'm with you. You need to get to that point where you say "enough is enough" "I'm doing this". I would like to lose 10lbs but haven't been able to stick to a diet. I love sweets and give in. Obviously I'm not obese and have the lifestyle to reflect that. If we are healthy we can get away with being a few pounds overweight.

Obesity is one thing. Being overweight is another.
