One more nice day here, and then 4 days of rain. I am afraid my strawberries (which I have been waiting for!) will be ruined....

The last 2 days in in Colorado Springs have been interesting to say the least. Wednesday night there was a storm that covered most of the city and stayed parked for 2 hours. During the event, it hailed 4 or 5 times. I was on the northern edge and had as large as golf/ping pong ball size hail but mostly marble size and smaller. The fourth round of hail pretty much wiped out all that the was still remaining in my garden from the previous rounds of hail. Further south, people had to be rescued from their vehicles when the hail/rain mix filled up the drainage systems and reached a depth of 3 to 4 feet (yes feet). They were removing the piles with bulldozers. There was an average of 2 inches of rain per hour with this storm. Then on Thursday night, a storm hit the eastern edge of Colorado Springs from north to south and dropped golf ball size hail and larger. This was a separte from the storm that was producing tornadoes in the eastern part of our county. I was on the western edge of this storm and got some of the hail but as bad as those further east (just east). I would estimate that we got another inch of rain with that storm. I can't complain though since our house and cars survived just fine and this is the 6th year for our raised beds and the first time we took serious hail damage. I spent Thursday finding some replacement tomato and pepper plants since it is too late to start them from seed. I will see if my carrots, lettuce, beets, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage will bounce back or if I need replant later this summer. I will have to reseed about a third of my corn today. The potatoes should come back. Luckily the cucumber and beans that I planted last week haven't sprouted yet and it is still early enough in the season that I can start over. I will post pics later. I guess mother nature thought I had so much fun planting everthing the first time she thought she would give me the opportunity to do it again. Seriously though, my heart goes out to those whose home and cars flooded with these storms.

Cityfarmer, I am so sorry for your garden! That is so devastating, but here you are, taking it with the pragmatism that gardeners have to aquire, in order to keep on planting. It seems like that hail storm should have been national news, but I didn't hear anything about it! I guess the big networks were too busy reporting about the queen's jubilee or something.

Wow cityfarmer, I can't even begin to imagine storms like that. I've never experienced them and also didn't hear anything on the news. You have such a positive attitude and are truely an inspiration. Seems like you always count your blessings which is what we all should do.

Thanks for all of the encouragement. It was very difficult to watch through the patio door. I replanted the corn today. Was going to do the peppers and the tomatoes but you can still see the water vapor in the air even though they say it won't rain today. They will be just fine under the grow carts. I hope I am not breaking any rules and I don't advertise often but KKTV news has great pics on their website of the storms.
