@majorcatfish , the chance of me running out of coffee is pretty slim. Dh makes sure there is always an extra #3 can in the pantry, he doesn't drink it, but he has to live with me. :D

I have to go out to the shed today to get pots, it is -7... so if I complain about the hot weather in a while, just slap me!

They are now revisiting the thought of one vacation instead of 2 for Massachusetts schools. Instead of Feb and April, one in March. That will give them more make time into June.

11 daylight hours? That means the girls will be laying eggs again pretty soon, huh? I shut off the lights and let them take a break partly for them to rest and partly because I lost so many eggs to freezing.

Yep, we are right there neck and neck for the next couple of months, Red. But, you had nearly an hour head start, back in December.

... let's see ... ;) there near Madison, you will have a (standard time) June 21st sunrise at 4:18am and a sunset at 19:41pm, for a little less than a 15 1/2 hours. Meanwhile, I will be enjoying a warm 16 hours even! I'll be there in that distant bright light :ya!

And, some may think I have neither math skills nor a life!

:) Steve

I have kept a light in my coop, just to add a little warmth. It does look like our below zero temps will end, by next week. The upside of lighting the coop... after a month of eating oatmeal for breakfast- we are finally getting eggs again. Perhaps Spring is on the way???

Get Redstars, I have 5 and they lay in winter, even in molt. I got 3 eggs today. They are 3 years old. Redstars are from a RIR rooster over a Delaware hen, and are sex linked.

That's what I've been keeping an eye out for. I'd like to find P.O.L pullets for less than an arm and a leg.

had my chickens' lights on a timer all winter and it has helped keep my faverolles laying. my 2 bantam lavender cochins have been somewhat steady-at least one gives me an egg ever other day (same girl), the other i'm lucky to get 1-2 eggs a week. i only know since one lays a creamy white while the other lays a slightly darker egg. on average i get about 3 eggs a day from about 12 girls.
