I am super cheap and don't have borders,so I am weeding the grass often.

Did you mention tomatillos or ground cherries? I liked those. Tomato ofcourse.

Plastic fencing ,bamboo poles, and zip ties are your friend. Very easy to move thing around to protect beds.

Have fun! I have been talking for years about getting soil, and I will finally do it this year....along with wood for fires!

Well...I'm one step closer today than I was a few days ago...dirt is in the pools along with some horse manure (because lord knows we have plenty), it rained last night pretty good, pools seem to be draining fine, and I BOUGHT PLANTS AND SEEDS TODAY!!!!! :rainbow-sun :rose :rainbow-sun

I was excited, even though I feel a little "got" by the jerk that checked me out at Houston Garden Center (she "forgot" to ring up my potting soil, then wouldn't add it to the previous total thus honoring my coupon, so I lost $10 in savings) but hey, I was tired after working all night and not in the mood for an argument, so I got my stuff and left. Anyways....

Disappointment in that aside, I bought a variety of tomato plants, pepper plants, and a couple of eggplant plants (is that right? or is it just eggplants?) since the A&M chart said to plant transplants of those things....then I just grabbed a bunch of seeds following that same chart and a load of herb plants. I figure instead of doing flowers on my porch this year, I will plant the herbs all up there (hence the potting soil - I figured it was time for fresh soil after quite a few years of the same old dirt in those pots). I even got a few herby things I have never grown or seen grown (like Rue and Chamomile)....Heck, why not?

Now all I gotta do is wait for daylight and get this stuff in the ground...though I may go ahead and plant the herbs tonight since I have light on the porch...

I am SOOOO EXCITED!!! :tools I can't wait until I am actually watering stuff! And hopefully getting just a few little veggies at least :) Thanks Ya'll!!! I will be posting picks and updating as I go....this site provides me SO MUCH encouragement it's amazing!

Well...it's been another busy long week...BUT...I got ALL of my herbs planted in their baskets on the porch ALONG with some hibiscus replacements for the one DH THREW AWAY while cleaning the porch this winter (he really meant well I suppose) and a couple of citronella plants just to see if they work - never had one!!! Also, I decided to give some extra 5 gallon buckets from work a "job" and I am attempting to start some cucumber seeds in them :)

Tomorrow, then plan is to get the pepper/eggplant/tomato plants into the pools (weather being the only potential issue as it could rain, but I hope not bad and not all day). SO WOO HOO HOO! GO ME :) And you should see my husband when I get home from work! Every day so far he has commented on how something is "already taller" or "Look, a little pepper's trying to grow on that one already!" He is JUST ITCHING to break out the miracle grow!

Here's a pic of the porch - post spring cleaning and herb planting. I feel like something has been accomplished!

Now on to conquer the tomato plants!

How exciting! I love the idea of using herbs on your porch. It looks really cute and will be practical for cooking!! Sounds like you've got Dh hooked on gardening! I agree with him, sometimes I swear you can watch those plants getting bigger in front of your eyes! Happy Gardening!
