I take good care of mine also.

I'm sure that's not what you were indicating Red, but hopefully being a good customer at the vets office isn't the only indication of conscientious pet husbandry.

Sorry, @thistlebloom, that was not what I was thinking, indicating or implying at all. If I were more knowledgable about such things, I wouldn't rely so much on the Vet. I was musing to myself over a past post that insisted most owners are negligent in caring for their pets. I still assert that most of the pet problems are the result of a few owners who probably shouldn't have pets at all.

Thistle there is no question on how well cared for your animals are. You do the same as almost everyone here. I do a stool culture 2x a year on my dogs, it more expensive then a float but covers more. Close friends adopted a child with HIV, she is at my house a lot and loves my dogs. My dogs are always licking her face, so I have to be sure they are parasite free.

I buy the shots and wormers from vet supply companies and I administer them myself, well, except for the rabies which have to be done by a licensed Vet. as required .All of my dogs were working farm dogs, so I gave them all of their shots as puppies, periodically after that since we have coyotes by the dozen all over our ranch. I worm them 2x per year too. As for cats, the only ones that we vaccinate are the Siamese house cats. The other barn cats no because they are coyote snacks and have a life span of about 6 months . We used to get about a dozen wild alley cats a dozen at a time for free from the County Pound ( before the bleeding hearts took over the pound and started to charge for the cats ). Now we buy rolled barley treated with Warfarin for pest control.

I agree with Red, most people with pets take good care of them, especially those on this forum. I think it's the few that are negligent that give others a bad name.

Bob "barn cats" cats that can't live inside are still free here. Groups are happy with them having food and warm place to sleep.
The bleeding hearts around here are so hung up to "rescue" any animal out there at no cost to them , then charge $125 / cat . I guess that they are more interested in the $$$ vs. have someone else rescue the cat from the bleeding hearts (in reality , animal hoarders that can't let any animal in their possession go but dressed as legal caretakers) and have a chance to sleep in the sunbeam.

We do puppy vaccines and the first round of "adult" vaccines. After that it's titers when vaccines are "due" we do heartworm.

Titers keeps everybody happy so we can say "nope we're good thanks". Rabies is done so we can get health certs if we need them.

The cats are indoor only cats so they get enough to get them altered (spay/neuter) and that's it.

This is really not an exaggeration unfortunately. Our pound has quit accepting new animals because they are holding on to a handful that they already had. I was reading an article in TSC's magazine (latest issue, free at the door) about an animal rescue that actually runs background checks and does a home visit before they will let you adopt one of their dogs or cats!
