Yes. We were getting hit 3 or 4 times a year with smashed boxes and/or torn up posts. This is still just 4x4's and 2x4's but with the post up between the boxes, it looks a little more imposing I guess. And that spot behind the boxes is perfect for a basket of flowers.

We have ours on a hinge supported by a steel cable so that it will swing. Vandals drove by in a car and tossed a heavy iron water pipe cover at it. The cable took some of the force and the box is dented but it still serviceable. I left it that way, and as it is already damaged they have left it alone. They put an explosive in it one time which blew it completely off the post as flat as a pancake. Too bad there is no open season on vandals.

Jack do you think it is a NY problem? Ordered the return to center mailbox.

I doubt it. We have lived here for a few decades and several boxes have been damaged. It appears that vandalism carries over generation after generation. Who knows what they get out of it.

Wonder if it is a problem of "disadvantaged" youth striking out against people who have nicer homes? (I haven't seen or heard of very much of this around here, so I don't know what socio-economic class of properties are attacked) Or maybe it is just the "haters gotta hate" syndrome?

Actually, we found out who blew up the mailbox several years later. A guy told my son that he did it, but not why, more like bragging. It was a kid who lived in the neighborhood, who was not at all disadvantaged, but the family was dysfunctional. When he grew up he was frequently in trouble for fights and hostile behavior. He did not live long.
