DH took Penny out on a walk this evening, but came back in about 5 minutes. Penny had a dead rabbit in her mouth, and DH was holding two more by the back feet, dead also. Penny had discovered a nest and killed three before DH could figure out what was going on, and react.
She wanted to lay on the carpet and chew on that rabbit, but that wasn't happening, if I could help it. I couldn't get her to drop it--all you could see was two little feet sticking out of her mouth.
Penny looked proud and guilty at the same time, lol!
I just decided to leave her out on her tie-out to let her go ahead and eat the poor thing. No getting it away from her.
After 15 minutes or so, I checked--no bunny feet in her mouth, so I let her come in.
I should be thankful, that's three rabbits that won't be in my garden next year. She just seems to enjoy killing little fuzzy things way too much.
(I know, she's a dog, a beagle-y dog, but still....)

Hey, gophers and chipmonks are benieth a Beagle's ( even a part bred Beagle's ) breeding . Even chasing a rabbit is a insult for a King Charles Spaniel . Geesh ! Find a good purebred dog that was bred to hunt vermin for that job.

Penny will even go after a mole underground. She can hear(?) or smell them as they work. She will stop digging if I get after her, but reluctantly.

I thought about another picture of Benjamin Bunny in the garden, yesterday. Should've spit at him!

I was walking not more than 10' away. He just watched me. Really tame every year at this time. Benjamin has grown comfortable seeing me there.

Hit with a rock, I've watched rabbits just jump and go back to watching. It's like they don't comprehend that it would be best for them to leave! Missed too many times with rocks and tear up garden plants every time I do ...

Not to be barer of bad news, but at this time of year rabbits may be infested with parasites that will now be with your dog. Keep a close watch for worms in fecal material.

It took my neighbor nearly $200 after her dog caught and ate a rabbit. (Of course, I think her Vet is overly cautious with an eye for expensive.)
