over the last couple years they have <ncdot> been talking about the us-158 by-pass going though stokesdale.
one of the 4 proposed routes was going through the middle of our house and as well 40 other homes.

well as of today's postcard from the <ncdot> they have scraped the idea of the 2 routes that could wipe out these homes, and decided to proceed on either going north or south of us.....

we are so happy and again we feel sad for the other property owners at the same time.....
know it sounds cold, but we have been here for 17 years and by the time they would have started to buy the properties our mortgage would almost be up, and even with the buy out we would have still been in the hole.....

Happy news!

"They" have talked about a NEWARK ROAD corridor off and on for years around here. Some prospective routes would have taken the road through our property. I haven't heard anything about it for a while. I would hate to lose this place.

I can't imagine being forced out like that. It would be hard to take, for any amount of money, that's for sure. You have a beautiful piece of land there. So glad you don't have to give it up!

We had a story of a man whose property was taken by eminent domain against his wishes. He fought a long fight, but in the end had no chance of winning. One day while he was at the Court House seeking another injunction, the bulldozers came in and downed his seven precious trees and the house.

Money for the new roadway dried up and it was never built. Of course the land was not returned once its intended use was undone. . . and it wasn't the land his family had owned anymore anyway.

Woo hoo!! That's great news major!! Eminent domain can be nasty business. My ex worked as the only city inspector for 5 years in a very small town. I learned lots about those things.

My Great Aunt...down in the MO Ozarks...lost her beautiful stone home and property to the new Hiway 71. That was such a shame too.

they are doing the widening of us-158 in 3 sections they will start buying the property in section 1 sometime in 2018 and will start buying in section 3 <stokesdale> in 2022...

hope they go for the northern route it's mostly all pastures, if they go south they will still go though a small sub-division under construction, wonder if the builder/ real estate company will tell the prospective buyer about the possible by pass going though. would hate to build a 450k house and a couple years later you get letter from the state, stating they are buying you out and heres a check for the county says the property is worth...and you still have to pay that 30 year mortgage..that would just plain suck...

Great news !!!!! I can understand the need for eminent domain, but think landowner should be over compensated . Having county say what property worth not right.

I think these topics are discussed in your local Planning & Zoning meetings. I would suggest to call your local city hall and ask about those meetings.

I think that in the case I mentioned, the owner's love of the farm that had been in his family for so many years overshadowed even the value of an honest price for the property. What I remember most was his fight to save the seven 100 year old trees that grew there -- planted by a great-great family member.
