over the last couple years they have <ncdot> been talking about the us-158 by-pass going though stokesdale.
one of the 4 proposed routes was going through the middle of our house and as well 40 other homes.

well as of today's postcard from the <ncdot> they have scraped the idea of the 2 routes that could wipe out these homes, and decided to proceed on either going north or south of us.....

we are so happy and again we feel sad for the other property owners at the same time.....
know it sounds cold, but we have been here for 17 years and by the time they would have started to buy the properties our mortgage would almost be up, and even with the buy out we would have still been in the hole.....
Wow! That must be a great relief for you. I live just a few minutes from Cape Cod, Ma. A great vacation destination. When we moved here 35 years ago the highway going to the cape was incomplete for more than 20 years. The plan was for the road to go straight through a big horse farm. The woman owner must have had some money as she was able to hold off the highway for more than 20 years through the courts. She offered an alternative route to go around her farm from the beginning of the proposal. It would not effect others and preserved her farm. After years of litigation, expensive alternative proposals by the state, of course requiring lots of money for engineering and whatever else it entails. Guess what they did? Used the route that she had proposed 20 years before. I'm sure the stress was a terrible burden for her as it was for you Major. So happy for you.

it was something that was always rolling around in the back of your mind that you could not shake no matter what...so yes it is a relief.
now we can start slowly on improvements on the house and property..:ya

during one of the town meetings we went to did learn if the route does through your property and it goes over either your well or septic field they have to buy your whole property. and if your an unlucky property owner once they say they are going though and buying your whole property you have 90 days to move out....

one thing both us have noticed this last year is that the large acreage property owners on the southern route have clear cut all the timber on their property. guess they are hoping for the route to come through them and make a couple k on the timber.

Glad your home is safe. It would suck to have to move and start over just when you finally get your place paid for.

Ah, so now you say you will be doing things around the property that you've held off doing for fear of losing the land. That in itself is a blessing -- being able to fix and build and add on to without fear.

Around here, there are BBQ "corners" where people show up towing their BBQ pits and sell sandwiches and BBQ plates, complete with potato salad and beans. Maybe something like that so you wouldn't have the 24-7 headache of you MUST be there to open the door....employees.....

Or what about a food vendor trailer? At the trades days and flea markets, the food vendors ALWAYS make money. Even if there isn't a good crowd, the other vendors have to eat.

Either of those scenarios would give you more freedom than a fixed in place restaurant.
