There are loads of great garden tools out there, like tiller. It simply all comes down to what you are looking to use your tiller for. Will you be weeding or breaking ground, what size is the range of area you are working with, and so on.?

Welcome, @DianeNash! I am happy to make your acquaintance here on The Easy Garden. It is always fun to meet new gardeners.

I see you are able to jump right in with good suggestions and excellent questions regarding what conditions @AMKuska will meet in her new home. Glad to have you growing with us.

@DianeNash welcome and thanks so much for posting on my thread! :D I'm actually quite flattered you'd pick my thread to introduce yourself in.

A tiller would be just amazing and I'd love to have one, but I'm not sure how heavy duty of a tiller I'm going to need until I see the ground I'm working with.

That would depend of what kind of garden you grow. Practically speaking, I think the essential tools for gardening are:
Scissors – nothing fancy, just plain scissors, you would be using plain scissors mostly for deadhead flowers, removing dead leaves, snip herbs and when harvesting your vegetables. Hand rake – for removing unwanted branches and helps loosening your soil. Trowel – look for a comfortable handle as you will use it mostly digging holes and mixing soil with compost and fertiliser. Water hoses – I have a kind of hose that I use for watering, and lets me turn the water on and off without constantly going back to the spigot. It is more convenient for me when watering my plants rather than using a watering can because I can pause and hold it for a while and then move to other parts of gardening. Shovel – A sharp pointed shovel when digging and many planting jobs. I get some of my other materials from a local landscape supplier in Sydney. Hope this helps!

Hi-dee-ho, @elleau! Great to have you here with us and even better to see you jump in with your good advice.

A tiller is a good idea if you have more garden than a shovel and fork can handle. Of course that tiller can be as large as a harrow plow if your garden is more field-sized. It is all a matter of choice and ability to manage you land. While not all of us can have our very own "Marigold", (Bay's tractor) we can dream, aim high, and make do with what we do have at our disposal.
