What Did You Do In The Garden?

my little clump of daffodils under the maple trees was sprouting this week & today we got snow. not a huge amount but enough to drive me nuts!

so, to make my mood a little better i've been sitting here grafting my fruit trees & just got the email FedCo is sending the 2 bundles of rootstock that i ordered early March. i was an idiot about 2 weeks ago & went a little crazy at the Scion exchange when they were selling the rootstock nearly 1/2 the price ($15/bundle of 10). the 2 1/2 hour trip was worth it though. i picked up 2 more bundles of Bud 9 and 1 bundle of OHxF97, i should have grabbed some of the stone fruit rootstock but missed out on that. i grabbed scions for at least 20 different types of apple, pear, peach, apricot and i think some cherries. also got some Breadseed Poppy seeds. i had these on my list for FedCo & they showed up with them for the seed exchange. i completely forgot to take my seeds to exchange. maybe next year i will remember to take everything.

well, back to grafting!

Planted 189 onions-wanted 100. Candy onions, anyone else plant them? First time for me. Couple short rows of transplanted garlic.

2 short rows of peas and threw radish seeds over rows.

We are moving stuff around, downsizing some things and re-purposing sheds. I will have fewer hens so their pen got moved and dh will build a smaller coop. Their old coop will be my new tack room. The blueberry "pen" is being moved and we will have a big open space where the fencing for that and the chickens and the old mule/goat pens were.

The big clematis that was growing on the blueberry fence is now going to be growing on a cattle panel arbor over the chicken pen, providing shade.
I got that clem moved, and some iris that used to be growing in front of the chicken pen, as well as a big rosa glauca. I put the rose on the west side of the new pen to shade them in the afternoon.
The west side of the chicken arbor will also get hops grown on it, so they'll have some nice shade on hot days.
If it hadn't been pouring rain I would have dug up the blueberries and got them in their temporary holding spot so I could take down all the CP in that area.
I'm excited about the changes we're making and how much more efficient and attractive the back will be.

did some raking this morning. yesterday's snow was melted off overnight so gave me a chance to do a little early yard work. went through the garden & pulled up the tomato cages i forgot to pull last fall. had to pull some black raspberry canes that were trying to root their ends throughout the cages. i foolishly left a cane to grow near the garden last year & now it wants to take over. chickens got to roam the garden for a bit & one of them kept getting under my feet trying to see what I could pull up trying to remove the canes.

got 20 apple & 10 pear trees grafted last night. still have about 25 more apples to graft. waiting for the rest of the rootstock to arrive for the rest.

The rain tapered off so dh and I went out and took down the cattle panels around the blueberries and pulled the t-posts. He dug out all the overwintered carrots, which was a successful experiment btw,
and I dug up the 12 blueberries and heeled them in temporarily until I can get their new area prepared.

I also dug up the ginormous clematis from my picket garden and put it next to it's sister, Sweet Summer Love on the east side of the new chicken arbor. Wish I could remember it's name...I just know it's a texensis variety with a nice big bell shaped pink bloom. My chickens are going to be so stylish this summer!

I also dug up several perennial sunflowers and rehomed them on the east side of my new tack room where they will grow against the barn red wood and I can see them from the kitchen window.

Replanted a thornless blackberry that a friend gave us that came from his moms place. It had also been in with the blueberries. Now it's on the south side of the chicken fence.
The chickens are surrounded by plantings now!
