I had to move a ton of my daylilies last fall. We had to put in a new septic system. So 3 different beds are now empty and waiting for the return of the moved plants. I am going all out on reconditioning the soil. I am going to put weed barrier over the bed and let them rest until fall. I have take out the weeds but have had problems with trumpet vine and terrible grassey weeds. I am hoping to cook the weeds and marinate the manures and compost in the heat of the summer. Time will tell the tale.It is a new season. What did you do in the garden today, yesterday, last week?
Two backyard beds have been covered with the temporary hoop house. Seed for Asian greens and escarole has been sown; bok choy transplants have gone in. The flower beds around the house have been cleaned up.
I have now begun in the little veggie garden by leveling a few beds cultivated last year, fertilizing, and planting some seed potatoes, onion sets and pea seed.

We have tarped some flower beds that got out of control with hay like grasses. I might even leave it one more summer to cook those based deep roots. Wind was strong so there was some repair needed.Came home from a camping trip today and dogs some holes in the future raspberry patch
And the silage tarps stayed put during high winds!
I should say that I no longer have the garden where I was doing outdoor planting in March, some years. I was there for 20+ years. The original property owner had 3 lots with a rental home on one, a garage on another, and open ground in between. Well, there were quite a few trees on that middle lot. Nevertheless, it was quite protected and a lower elevation than my home or my distant garden - still in use. The original owner was my gardening neighbor until he turned the property over to his son. I stayed on ... until it was put up for sale.

If you can pile up fresh manure at this spot you will be able to cook it. Otherwise, go for a cardboard layer that you cover with soil.
It got so cold I did not finish. I started with a big load of leaf compost. I put limestone and greensand down on top, a bit of 10-10-10, and finally some fresh horse manure. I will put cardboard and then the weed barrier cloth tomorrow, if it is not too cold. It has been warm for a week and tonight the windchill will get down to 7 degrees.
