I like roasted beets too, really roasted anything. I also will put raw into green smoothies when I can buy some fresh beets. Beets really isn't something you see very often in our area.

@seedcorn I never ate candied beets but we love candied sweet potatoes and carrots. I am definitely going to try this soon.

I cut them up into pieces and and season them with cinnamon, cloves and other spices. If you hot water bath can correctly, then store where it is dark and cool they can last for years. I opened a 2013 quart of apple pie filling and used it for a makeshift pork chop meal in the crock pot last week.

This evening we planted broccoli , cauliflower, cabbage, onions ,and head lettuce. Also was able to till another 8' foot swath the full length of the garden.hopefully we will be able to plant it in next day or so but the weather shows rain possible. I know we are kinda late getting some of the stuff in but the wet spring has slowed down the gardening situation.

I planted more cabbage. Everything planted so far still looks good. I have the tomatoes outside spending the nights out and shade during the day. I also make rhubarb lemonade and rhubarb brownies, cut some bok-choy for supper the last couple of nights.

Our cabbage is purple from exposure to the elements.

It felt like a summer night ... after a warm summer day :). Almost too much exposure to the sun! Was over in the neighbor's yard reclaiming his garden in the evening. It looks like we will go ahead and make use of the 18' by 35' through the growing season rather than "abandoning" it to him for a 4th time.

I think the neighbor's time for making any use of it has passed and that seems a difficult reality for him to admit. He cannot keep it cleared of weeds by himself or when paying help, will not care for his own plants when he plants some, and doesn't use the produce even when it is planted and tended for him.

In the other gardens: Planted some statice and, since the first sowing is up, put in the last of the peas. More of my favorite, snap peas ...

I watch a LOT of gardening programs and so many of these expert gardeners start from seed indoors and then plant outdoors, which is something we all can do! :hugs

@ducks4you did my hot hot water bath all lids took they are in cupboard
barely used I did remember that much.

You are right. You shouldn't waste your time canning something that nobody really wants to open. I have canned a new recipe (to ME) for saltless bread and butter pickles bc my family keeps eating through them. We LOVE them with hamburgers and DH and DD's put them On the burgers, while I like to eat them off of the plate. My family also goes to the pantry in the basement and says, "Why didn't you TELL me you had spiced pears?!?!?" So...I will can them again, too after the 2017 harvest.
