I would think the Beets will be fine Mary. Just make sure they are properly thinned.

Today I got rained out of working in the garden, but I brought the plastic inside and cut and prepared some of it.

Did a round of the campsites in the rain wearing rain gear. Had to take a hot shower after to bring body temp back up. Shaved today. That is big news for me and my Neanderthal beard of 14 gauge copper wires. Wiped out 4 double bladed razors. That's 8 blades, and still need to touch it up for close shave. They are the thickest beard hairs that do not easily cut.

Today I almost finished preparing the bed I wanted to have ready to plant March 1st.

It was quite the deal. I used about 50 dollars worth of hardware cloth in it to make it gopher proof. 16 feet long, 3 feet wide. Netted thoroughly, and wire stitched on bottom and sides to about 15" above soil, and 20" below soil level. All side netting is covered inside and outside with heavy plastic.

Tomorrow the soil will be covered with plastic and I will plant I believe 10 purple seeded golden podded Peas. I believe I will also put in 1 single Blauschokker. They will all have 7 foot climbers made of wire fencing. As the season warms enough for beans to be planted, some will go in with them.

Moving that much soil made me feel older this year than last year.

Yabut, I think they increased gravity a couple notches and reduced oxygen a couple percent too.

They do that once in awhile ya know...

What, that's worldwide?

Does work, however lame, in the greenhouse count? I'm afraid I'll need to beat the backyard grass down into the mud today. The interior of the greenhouse must be repaired. The mess will be made of the lawn building the 2-part bench out there to be hauled in and set on legs.

Inside, I have a mess not of my own making. I noticed that carpenter ants were in the framed part of the east wall last summer. Pulled off a piece of insulation board on Sunday. Guess what? They are riddling the insulation board one over. An ant was even standing guard behind the one I took off!

This better not be extensive. It is not expensive to replace but a bother. I'll need to cut it precisely or, there will be voids. May as well leave the riddling of the ants!

And, how do I get them out and gone for good??? I thought they are only in wood! Maybe they are, below the foam board is a wood sill on the foundation wall. Haven't seen that they've done anything to the studding.
:barnie Now is the time, before that bench goes back in there and I will have zero room!

Yesterday I planted the snow peas, finished another hugelkulture bed, this one built higher, made mental plans for the new rabbit habitat I was planning in another location to actually built it between the 2 hugelkulture beds. The rabbit houses are going to be exactly like I planned I am just moving the location to one more central to our water use and existing animal chores.

I looked up "hugelkuture beds" and I guess my beds are a form of that, each a bit different. So far I've just looked at Google images though.

I really should get my camera out. Maybe I'll do that today.

Yesterday, I planted my pole beans. I only had Kentucky wonder. Today, I will plant some of Marshall's pole beans. I have one more obelisk tower left.

Kale is going to seed and giving some to the chickens. I thought of blanching and freezing it but since I grow it year round there's no point when I always have plenty of fresh.

Your ground is warm enough already to plant beans Mary? Wow! I'm jealous. Mine is barely warm enough right now to plant the Peas under plastic.

I'm determined to get the peas planted today!

I hope I'm planting them at the right time Marshall. Our night temps have been around 48°. They are already selling starts at the nurseries.
