today I pulled the oats & field peas from around the tomato plants. I thought I might have to cut it to keep from disturbing the tomato roots. no problem. the vegetation was about 18" tall. I laid it all down as mulch around the tomatoes. put the cages around said tomatoes.
we cleared an area of briars, mesquite, and cedar leaving oaks, a few hackberries, and some soapberries. looks nice all cleaned out.

Today I finished that big bed. Got it all framed up, filled the edges, and got it all planted with Beans. Also did a rounds and helped a camper get the last of their leaves raked up.

Tomorrow I will definitely finish framing another bed and try to get it filled the rest of the way, maybe even planted. Thinking about mostly pole varieties in it that have colorful pods.

I fertilized the front yard grass and watered it in real good. I scooped composted leaves from the chicken run and mixed with bone meal and top dressed some of the garden beds. I got 14 bags of leaves to put in the chicken coop and run.

Busy day and kind of nice -- overcast this morning but a sunny afternoon - I got quite a bit done. Separated all of the 1st sowings of tomatoes to 9 plants/flat. That's a flat one-half full, so they have plenty of room. The hoop house is filled! Asters & calendulas went in the unheated hoop house. And, I set up a "hoopie" for the snaps. There is plenty more room in each but that's rotation enuf and it will be freezing tomorrow morning.

Here are some pictures of a hoopie from last year: http://www.theeasygarden.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=33451

Since there is only one on the lawn and I have 2 covers from last year - the snaps are out there with 2 layers of plastic over them. I think they are fine. They have been in 40 nights and even if it freezes in there, they'll snap right out of it :p.

The asters are a little more tender than the snaps but it shouldn't freeze in that bigger structure. They have a lot of air space around them . . . tho' it is hard to know for sure. Don't want to have to take any drastic measures before dawn tomorrow, trying to save my asters :p.

Worked in the little veggie garden. Soon, there will be nothing left to plant except over in the shady corner. Aaannd, started prepping the dahlia garden for the roots!

The birdbrains and I were chomping up weeds and breaking soil in the garden with my little teeny weeny rototiller I bought last year...and it quit! It's electric. We had Randyman look at it and he made it start but it goes slower than I do. Now I am trying to teach the bird brains to scratch REALLY DEEP for their food, because there is no way I can do all this with hand tools!

Well, I did finish the basic framing. Some that I want to go higher can wait for next winter, and maybe if I feel like it, I might extend the middle bed of the front, west, addition. But for now, the framing is done. Whew!

Didn't get to planting more Beans today. That'll be tomorrow. West side of the south bed in the main section. Those will be bush there. I think that will be a section where I plant 3 seeds each of a bunch of varieties.

Tomorrow will also be raking leaves at one of the camper's camps.

The south bed is completely planted now, and the south middle beds are too. The north middle bed, east part is completely planted, but the west part still needs work. I have a beautiful idea for that one.

Got the second smaller planting of the beans I got from Russ planted today.

Didn't do a thing in the actual 'garden' today other than water. But in the big garden (aka yard) I got all the grass mowed, planted the 2 lenten (sp?) roses, put in a small 5-plant hedge of forsythia and planted the other 5 in a large circle, stared at the 4'x10' rectangle of chicken-poo dirt where the tractor used to be and then planted a BUNCH of sunflowers in it, pulled up 2 wheelbarrows of weeds and gave them to the chickens, moved the big trailer off the side of the driveway and into the pasture, then tested the newly hung hammock for any dry-rot from winter storage.

Nuthin'.

The Weather Service scared me into staying home! The 40+mph gusts still haven't occurred. The WS says, "Just you wait until tomorrow! And, if that ain't good enuf - wait until Monday!" Gusts today only went above 30mph . . .

I did uncover the snaps & asters but had to put the asters away because they've only been out once before. Covered the snaps in the little hoopie mid-afternoon. Then, the sun came out! Don't know what the temp is in there but it is now after 4pm and the plastic would probably fly away if it was lifted for some ventilation. Must be the warmest for today at 66 but the greenhouse has been closed up tight all day and it has only just now broke 70. I'll have to do something if it goes much higher but this isn't the clear windy day I was skeered it was going to be.

"Just you wait until tomorrow!" Ugh.
