My last fill-up was at $1.89, but I have seen it as low as $1.85 around here (one day and it was back up).

The Government considers this lowering of gas prices to be a tax break. Since the cost of gas is lower, and state and federal taxes are set on a percentage of the cost of a gallon of gas,
"They" say we aren't paying enough in taxes with the price of gas so low. They are considering a 12 (cent? or percent?) increase in the fuel tax to recoup government losses. Of course, this increase will not disappear when the prices go back up.

Wisconsin used to have an automatic percentage increase in the gas tax every few years. That way the elected officials could say they didn't vote for an increase in taxes, but the state would continue to get higher revenues. One of the first things our new Governor did was change that law so it would take a legislative vote to raise the gas tax. No one really wants to campaign on raising taxes -- not even a small bit more on gas.

One of the smartest thing Edwin "The Crook" Edwards did while governor of Louisiana was to change how the state taxed the oil and gas producers. Instead of a fixed amount per barrel of oil or cubic foot of natural gas, he changed it so they paid a percentage of the price they got for it. When the price went up a lot (and it soon did), he had enough money to play with that he was a very popular governor.

The downside is when the price drops less tax money comes in. It's not a dependable source for tax money. Sales tax is not either. How much sales tax you get depends on how much people spend. Right now that should be going up. It is around here.

Red, you are exactly right. When the prices go back up, the tax does not go away. Then the politicians have all this free money to spend and hey become very popular.

Filled up at $2.15 but that was because I had .20 per gallon reward points. First time I've filled my Tahoe for $40 instead of $80. Sure felt great!
