Do you leave a night light on when you go to bed ? Cane and I where talking about checking the house in middle of night when we think we heard some thing. Do you get out of bed or do you just roll over and go back to sleep. Do you lock your bedroom door while sleeping? Do you depend on pets to wake you if prowler around ? Do you send your partner while you stay in bed or check house with them ? What do you do when things go bump in the night.

Usually the bump in the night is the dog! We do lock the house before turning in. William barks when anything disturbs him. So we just yell at him to shut up and go back to sleep!

I began to use a bathroom nightlight for navigational purposes about 20 years ago. All interior room doors stay open overnight ... except bathroom out of bedroom, now and then ;).

. Do you lock your bedroom door while sleeping?
???

I can't hear a thing overnight. I appreciate that DW has normal hearing. While I was wearing hearing aids and indoors, she mentioned fire truck sirens today. I said that I couldn't hear them. "Oh my gosh!" she said. Usually, she doesn't make comments like that but since the trucks were on the street behind our house ...

Tinnitus. Sound changes. What should I respond to?

No nightlight. Our Great Pyrenees bark at night to keep predators away. I have gotten up a few times when their barking was a peculiar frenzy. I have never known what was out there driving them nuts, but I pet them and praise them for waking me up and dragging me out of bed...…..

Usually we both go out to investigate. One night I went out, had my phone, called my husband to come quick, Paris had a copperhead and a lamb was sticking her stupid nose up in the snake's business. Paris was trying to keep the lamb safe, her stupidity ran Paris to new levels of anxiety. DH came running with a garden rake and killed the snake. Then we laughed as Paris stalked the snake and killed it again and again. She shook it to pieces.

When coyotes get too close, DH walks to the end of the driveway, yells and fires a pistol in the ground. That shuts them up, they get shot at enough here that they run off.

On most of their barking, I just roll over and go back to sleep. They know their business, who am I to interfere?

I sleep through small earthquakes. If an intruder is coming in, I'm pretty much dead. :p

I was suddenly awakened one night to loud banging on the door. In my confused, adrenalin affected state I SWORE that I was seeing faint reflections of red & blue flashing lights on the trees outside the bedroom window. I went to the door, peeked out, nothing.. No lights, no cars, no person banging on the door. Then realized that both dogs were still asleep in the bedroom and one of the cats was still asleep on the bed.
Still don't know where the faint lights came from.... some sort of trick my eyes were playing on me? Spooky though. Never did get back to sleep that night.

Our house makes so much noise at night (and day) that if I investigated each noise I would never sit down. The house is not old enough for there to have been a death here and us not have heard about it. (so, no ghosts, unless it is built on an old burial ground, which I doubt).

With the sand quarry near us setting off explosives frequently, and being inside an earthquake area, the house has settled a lot. So we get bumps in the night. Sometimes things fall. Maybe they have been precarious for a long time.

When I hear noises, I try to envision what they are: "sounds like a 2 by 4 sliding down the wall and hitting concrete floor.....sounds like a small can falling off the dryer and rolling across the floor....sounds like squirrels in the attic having races...sounds like a psychotic murderer rattling his knife against the living room window"

Sometimes, though, seemingly loud things happen and no one hears it. Once one of DH's motorcycles in the garage fell over due to a slow flat tire. It banged against another bike, which banged into another, and another bike, and another, this one against the garage door. Like dominoes, they all fell. We never heard a thing.
