I planted my peppers, tomatoes and eggplant in the same bed... I guess I didn't follow the guidelines :hide I do know about rotating crops and don't plan on planting those in the same beds for at least 3-4 years. My potatoes are in 1/2 wine barrels about 4 feet away.. messed that up too :P

There are many varieties that will grow in "hot" climates like CA. There is a commercial blueberry farm across the road from my mother's house in Zone 8 and they grow Duke as a main crop. Southern High bush types usually do very well here and are recomended the most.
I live near Redding CA in...
The hummers are really swarming my feeders now that the manzanita is done blooming. I have tons of Anna's and for the first time here a Rufous, now those are bossy little guys. I'm going through about 2 cups of nectar every day. :ep
You could get the next best apple in the world or one that you could only to make cider out off. Pink lady or Cripp's Pinks is one of my favorite apples :drool But, you could always graft a proven apple to them. I just thought it was neat to find the fully sprouted apple tree seedling inside...
Check out Pink Lady apples from the supermarket in late spring for sprouted seeds in the core. You can use the apple seedlings from these as standard apple root stock or to experiment with seedling apple trees. You never know what quality of apple you'll get with open pollenated apples, but the...
Of course :drool that's why I bought too many. Never go shopping while hungry...I guess I can't pick tomatoes out either
Well at least the chickens and I will be feasting on fresh tomatoes this summer :)

Ok, my self control.....is gone  I went to the nursery to get 4 more tomato plants and came home with 8 :th Then I had to go to Home Depot and get more wood for another raised bed. I couldn't resist all the huge beautiful 4" potted tomatoes they had locally grown.
The FINAL list: one of...
Thanks Steve,
Big Beef always seems do do well for me and is a great plant:) And Sweet 100 is an awsome plant. I planted Black Krim last year but the plant didn't do well, just a few green tomatoes. I'm trying it again from a better nursery with healthier plants and planting it much earilier...
So, far I have:

1 Better Boy
2 Sunsugar
1 Sweet 100
1 Black Krim

My tree is too little and is starting to leaf out so I think it's too late this year. But if you are still looking next year I could send you some scion wood. I plan to graft several apple trees with mulitiple varieties some day:)
Here is a good source for mail order scion wood. They have a...
I like the gutter/vertical garden, but I would make it free standing not against the house. I agree with Rozzie that against the house it could cause problems. Maybe I could put sections of soaker hose IN the gutter for "direct" watering without getting the leaves wet.
But, I'm going to try...
I'm looking for suggestions on creative ways to grow leaf lettuce and greens. In other words, not in the ground but in containers, hanging baskets, cedar boxes or trays. I can't plant in the ground because i don't have enough prepared garden space and the chickens and insects will destroy it the...
I just put a order in at Bakers Creek too. I don't know if I'll have enough room for everything :)

:lau That happened to us one year. After hiding the easter eggs, we were just about to take all the younger kids out for the egg hunt. When we looked outside and saw..... our two labs playing tug-a-war with the "easter bunny" right in the middle of the yard. :th
"Mommy why are the dogs eating...
Don't believe chill hours for Honeycrisp. They are being grown in Southern California. The chill hours for apples are being challanged by many growers.
Here is a link to "hot climate" apple growing. I learned some very intersesting info on growing apples from this site :)...
Wal-mart is just in it for the profit. What sells good is cool packaging. My son is drawn towards all the "cool" stuff that they have lining the aisles. Most of it is totally over priced junk food that costs few cents in highfructose cornsyrup and artifical flavoring to make. Fresh fruits...
