I never saw what sun or shade this area gets. I'm in Central Ky (zone 6) and our summer heat/humidity is a killer. If this is full sun I'd go with a mix of perennials/annuals and one would be the coneflowers (SO many types out there) mentioned above, LOVE it. You could even get dwarf ones for...
Here in Kentucky (zone 6) my mother had a huge oak cut down 10 years ago and it was $1,200 and not they didn't take the tree nor grind out the stump (if you grind up the stump compost it and it'll be a great mulch later). As far as hellebores, I have 2, not sure the name, a pink one and a green...
Wow I cannot imagine an acre of onion seedlings. I sow mine in a window box, sprinkle soil over top and water down and it goes under my light. I can't get Candy Onion Sets around here and they are expensive to buy and have shipped (I have done it from Dixondale but realized much cheaper to do...
DigitS I LOVE the Doc Martin show, I can't wait for them to make the new episodes, I think they are starting this month on that (or I heard they were). If its summer, my hair is twirled and clasped at the back of my head and its a tank top and shorts and usually barefoot. LOL But I'm not a...
I finally found the PERFECT salsa recipe (and its been tested to insure it won't spoil). My bosses and friends drive me crazy wanting to come and wipe me out every year (this year I told one I'd supply her with plants and the recipe and they can buy their own jars and do it themselves since I...
I had paste tomatoes coming out my ears last year, I did Romeo Roma, Worley Red (they are HUGE and you can even slice those and they are delicious but didn't produce a lot of them because my neighbor brought in a huge bush which blocked the sun), Amish Paste and just a Roma that someone shared...
I usually have a hard time getting my cauliflower to germinate, I planted it, broccoli, peppers and tomatoes and by golly they were up and with leaves (just did it Tuesday) last night while I'm barely getting germination on any other vegetables. But watch out, I've got trays of flower seeds...
I wanted my grandmother's rose but they wouldn't let us dig it up (new owner) so I took a pot of soil over there, stuck the end of one stem down in the dirt and tamped around it (still connected to the bush) and came back every couple days and kept it watered, eventually when I tugged on the...
Well when I go to clean vegetables, wash them all up, then those tops you cut off and ends of like onions (even the skins cause they add a nice color to your broth), celery, carrots, turnips, etc. toss them in a big freezer bag. Once your bag is full roast them in the oven with your bones til...
I LOVE making stock and generally roast my bones and veggies in the oven to darken and then plop in a big pot of water. My BF is a vegetarian so I make a lot of vegetable broth and have found adding a few prunes to the pot makes a nice dark delicious vegetable stock. Can someone tell me, how...
I went and looked and even in my Bread & Butter pickle recipe (which I absolutely love, eat the peppers and onions too) it takes a lot of sugar for the amount you get (I think I got 6 pints though from my recipe)
Bread & Butter Pickles (Brenda Neals SIL)
4 quarts sliced medium sized cucumbers...
My friends tell me I boil my eggs wrong they theirs always has shell stuck and they chunk it out. I just put water on to boil, get the eggs out and put them in, in 20 minutes I go back, dump them and while hot under running water I shell them (very easily I might add). LOL
My baskets went over great. I found some cute round labels to print off the internet, printed on thick bond paper, cut them out and used a glue stick to put them on the top with what was inside Added some homemade treats (Dollar Tree also has 2 gift basket bags for $1), just slip the baskets...
Thanks everyone. Well I've already got baskets I collected this summer that are nice and sturdy and should hold 6-8 jars and I bought bags of the red basket filler from the Dollar Tree along with basket bags and have made up the bows and my bosses have already hinted of things they hope will be...
So I am making baskets for bosses of canned goods and wondering what creative ways you present your jars? Fabric on top or just a tag? Also do you make homemade treats to put in a bag in your baskets, if so, what are your favorite recipes?
My yellows don't produce as much as the reds do either but they are yummy to gobble up, and I have a couple crops (mid summer and mid fall) so guess mine are everbearing. Were shared with me by a friend.
Tonight I'm making up a batch of monkey butter which will be going into my bosses' gift baskets for Christmas. First time doing this recipe so if I like it might make another batch to give to my co-workers too!
